Chapter 9 - The Promise of Tomorrow

Six months later, the golden colors of autumn painted the trees around the mountain valley in brilliant shades of orange, red, and yellow.
It was my fifth birthday.
The wide backyard of the mountain chalet was transformed into a magical playground filled with colorful balloons, a bouncing castle, a petting zoo with baby goats, and a three-tiered strawberry shortcake that was taller than I was.
Children from the local mountain village, whom I had met at my new private preschool, were running around the grass, playing tag and laughing.
Standing near the wooden fence, watching the party with a serene smile, was Mama. She looked stunning in a simple light-blue summer dress, her skin glowing with health and happiness. She no longer looked tired. The dark circles under her eyes were completely gone, replaced by a radiant beauty.
Beside her stood Alejandro, holding two cups of fresh lemonade.
"She's growing so fast," Alejandro remarked gently, handing a cup to Mama as they watched me ride Lily the white mare around the ring, guided safely by a gentle instructor.
"She talks about you constantly at school," Mama laughed softly, taking a sip of her lemonade. "She tells all her classmates that her godfather is a giant who built her a castle."
Alejandro let out a hearty, rich laugh that echoed across the pasture. "Well, I suppose she isn't entirely wrong."
He looked at Clara, his expression softening into something deep and tender. Over the past six months, living together in the peace of the mountains, an unspoken bond had bloomed between them—a quiet, beautiful respect that had slowly blossomed into deep affection.
"Clara," Alejandro said softly, stepping closer to her. "I wanted to ask you something."
Mama turned to look at him, her heart beating a little faster. "Yes, Alejandro?"
"My legal team in Chicago finalized the papers today," he said, pulling a small silver key from his pocket. "The old Moretti Manor in Gold Coast... I have officially donated the entire building to the Chicago Children's Hospital."
Mama gasped, her hands flying to her chest. "The mansion?!"
"It was a place filled with dark memories for too long," Alejandro explained softly. "Now, it is being converted into a state-of-the-art pediatric allergy research facility and free medical clinic. Named the Emma Moretti Children’s Center."

Mama smiled through tears of joy, leaning her head gently against Alejandro’s shoulder. "You have a good heart, Alejandro. Beneath all that scary Boss armor... you are a truly good man."
"Only because two sweet angels saved me from the dark," Alejandro murmured, putting his arm around my mother's shoulders, holding her close as the mountain sun began to set over the valley.
