Chapter 8 - The Mountain Sanctuary

Three days later, the high-stakes violence of Chicago felt like a distant, bad dream.

The mountain sanctuary was breath-taking. Nestled deep within a private valley surrounded by towering pine trees and snow-capped peaks, the timber-and-stone chalet looked like something out of a fairytale book.

Mama and I sat on the wide wooden porch, wrapped in cozy wool blankets, sipping warm cocoa with tiny marshmallows.

Down on the green pasture below the chalet, a gentle white mare was grazing quietly near the wooden fence.

Footsteps sounded on the porch boards.

Alejandro walked out, dressed casually in a dark sweater and jeans—looking far more like a loving uncle than a feared underworld king. The tension that had locked his shoulders for years was completely gone.

"Good morning, Clara. Good morning, Emma," he said warmly, stepping over and pulling up a wooden chair beside us.

"Good morning, Don Alejandro," Mama said, offering him a peaceful smile.

"Please, Clara," Alejandro reminded her gently. "Call me Alejandro."

He turned to look at me, pointing down toward the pasture. "Did you see Lily down there?"

"Yes!" I squeaked, my eyes wide with delight. "She’s so pretty! Can I pet her?"

"Of course you can," Alejandro laughed softly. "In fact, she’s waiting for you. The trainer is down by the barn."

Mama set her mug down, looking at Alejandro with deep, quiet gratitude. "Alejandro... the news on the television yesterday... they said the Valenti syndicate is completely gone. They said Senator Harrison and Donato Valenti were sentenced to life in prison."

Alejandro nodded slowly, looking out over the majestic mountain peaks. "The dark era of Chicago is over, Clara. The corrupt men who poisoned our city are behind bars. My business is fully legitimized now. We have transitioned all our operations into legal maritime shipping, real estate, and international trade."

He looked back at my mother, his eyes sincere and steady.

"Which means," Alejandro continued, "there are no more shadows. No more hiding. No more staff quarters in the basement."

He pulled a thick leather document folder from his jacket and laid it on the table before Mama.

Mama opened it timidly. Inside were legal deeds, trust accounts, and school enrollment documents.

"What... what is this?" Mama asked, her breath catching.

"That is the deed to a four-hundred-acre estate right here in the valley," Alejandro explained gently. "And a trust fund set up in Emma’s name that will cover her healthcare, her private tutoring, her college tuition, and anything else she ever desires for the rest of her life. You will never have to work another day in your life, Clara. Unless you want to."

Mama stared at the papers, her hands shaking, tears brimming in her soft eyes once more. "Alejandro... this is too much. We cannot possibly accept this..."

"Clara," Alejandro said softly, taking her hand gently in his. "When I was lying on that study floor, suffocating on synthetic poison, I had millions of dollars in the bank, hundreds of armed guards, and power over an entire city. But none of it could buy me a single breath of air."

He turned his head, looking down at me as I happily ate my marshmallows.

"Your daughter gave me that breath," Alejandro whispered, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "She gave me my life. Everything I own is just a small return on that gift."
