Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm in Bethesda Terrace

The November wind howled across Central Park, driving crisp golden leaves into frantic circles around Bethesda Fountain. But inside the circle created by Sebastian Vale, Clarissa Hart, and my triplets, time itself felt entirely suspended.

Clarissa’s pale eyes darted frantically between the three four-year-olds in the stroller and the man who was supposed to marry her in less than a month. Her polished veneer was cracking rapidly under the weight of a revelation she had never anticipated.

"Sebastian," Clarissa hissed, stepping closer and attempting to loop her gloved arm through his. Her voice was laced with a mix of panic and social desperation. "We have a luncheon with the Mayor’s committee in twenty minutes. Whatever... whatever this mistake is, your grandfather's legal team can handle it quietly. Let’s go."

Sebastian didn't even look at her. He didn't move an inch.

With a brutal, unyielding flick of his shoulder, he shook off her grip as if her touch burned him. His gaze remained locked on my face, those intense, stormy gray eyes—the exact shade of Noah’s, Ivy’s, and Owen’s—burning through the cold air between us.

"Clarissa," Sebastian said, his voice dropping an octave into a low, deadly register that sent a shudder through the quiet plaza. "Take the car. Go home."

"Sebastian! You can't be serious!" she shrieked, her voice echoing off the angel statue above us. "She’s a nobody! You divorced her four years ago! You told me yourself that your marriage was an impulse that meant nothing—"

"I said leave," he growled, turning his head just enough for her to see the lethal edge in his expression.

Clarissa stumbled back a step, her face draining of all color. She realized, perhaps for the first time in her pampered life, that the powerful billionaire she thought she had conquered was a stranger. She glared at me with pure, unadulterated venom, spun on her designer heels, and rushed toward the park entrance where two black SUVs were idling.

When she was gone, the silence that settled between us was deafening.

My toddlers, sensing the thick tension in the air, grew quiet. Owen gripped his stuffed dog tighter, his thumb slipping into his mouth as he stared up at the tall man looming over them. Ivy snuggled into her brother's side, while Noah, always the fiercely protective eldest by three minutes, narrowed his little gray eyes at Sebastian.

"Maya," Sebastian whispered, taking a cautious step forward, his hands raised in a gesture of absolute surrender. "Look at me. Please."

"I am looking at you, Sebastian," I replied, my voice shaking despite every effort to project strength. "And all I see is the man who discarded me the moment his grandfather told him I didn't fit into the Vale family blueprint."

"You think I left you because of my grandfather?" His voice broke slightly, a crack in his formidable armor. "Maya, the night I walked out of our apartment in Brooklyn, I received a security alert that a rival cartel from Chicago had put a hit out on my immediate family. I thought I was protecting you. I filed those papers because I was told that as long as you were legally tied to me, you were a target!"

I let out a harsh, bitter laugh that cut through the winter chill. "Protecting me? You didn't give me a choice! You didn't talk to me! You sat across a conference table with three lawyers, handed me a pen, and told me our seven months together were a mistake!"

"Because Arthur told me it was the only way you would stay away!" Sebastian took another step, now standing mere inches from the stroller. Tears, genuine and hot, welled in his gray eyes—a sight I had never witnessed in all the years I had known him. "My grandfather brought me photos of you leaving a medical center in Boston three weeks after I left. He told me... he told me you had terminated the pregnancy."

My breath hitched in my throat. The ground beneath my boots felt like it was crumbling.

"He... he told you what?" I gasped, clutching the stroller handles so hard my knuckles turned white.

"He showed me fake medical records, Maya!" Sebastian rasped, dropping to his knees right there on the damp stone of Bethesda Terrace, bringing himself eye-level with the triplets. "He told me you hated me so much that you eliminated any trace of us. He told me you took a settlement check and vanished to Europe. I believed him because I was broken, because I thought I had destroyed the only good thing in my life!"

Noah leaned forward out of his seat, reaching a small hand toward Sebastian's trembling shoulder. "Why is the tall man crying, Mommy?"

May you like

Sebastian froze, looking at Noah's little hand resting on his designer coat. A single tear escaped his eye and tracked down his sharp jawline. He reached out with extreme gentleness, his finger hovering over Noah's cheek before lightly brushing against the boy's soft skin.

"Because," Sebastian whispered to my son, his voice thick with raw emotion, "the tall man has been blind for four years."
