Chapter 8 - The Redefinition

Winter melted into a glorious, warm spring, and with it, the painful wounds of our past began to heal into strong, resilient scars.
Sebastian completely restructured his life. He resigned as CEO of Vale Global, transitioning to Executive Chairman, which allowed him to delegate ninety percent of his daily corporate duties to a trusted board of directors. For the first time in his life, he wasn't working eighty-hour weeks.
Instead, he was making pancakes shaped like Mickey Mouse every morning at seven.
He was driving the triplets to their new pre-school in Manhattan, holding their tiny hands as they walked through the gates.
He was sitting on the couch in our new home—a stunning, historic brownstone in Brooklyn, only a few blocks from where our original, secret apartment had been—watching me sketch designs for my new independent art foundation, which Sebastian had funded without any strings attached.
One Saturday afternoon in May, while the children were playing in the brownstone's private backyard garden, I heard a knock on my study door.
Sebastian walked in, wearing a simple gray t-shirt and jeans—a sight that still thrilled me after months of seeing him stripped of his corporate armor.
"I have something for you," he said, holding his hands behind his back.
"Sebastian, we said no lavish gifts," I reminded him with a mock scold.
"It's not lavish," he promised, stepping forward and placing a thick leather-bound journal on my desk.
I opened it. Inside were hundreds of pages filled with Sebastian's neat, sharp handwriting, dated over the last four years.
April 12, 2022: I looked at your side of the bed today. The apartment is empty. Arthur says you are in Paris, but every time I close my eyes, I hear your voice telling me you loved me. I feel like half of my soul has been ripped out.
January 14, 2023: It was your birthday today. I bought a small chocolate cake from the bakery near our old apartment and sat in the car outside for two hours. I don't know where you are, Maya, but I hope you are happy. I hope you found someone who didn't fail you the way I did.
October 3, 2024: Clarissa's father pushed for the engagement announcement today. I felt nothing. I haven't felt anything in three years. There is only work, Arthur's demands, and the ghost of the life we were supposed to build.
Tears streamed down my face as I flipped through page after page of silent, solitary grief. He hadn't abandoned me in his heart. He had been living in the same prison of heartbreak that I had, both of us manipulated by a puppet master who fed on our misery.
I looked up from the journal to find Sebastian watching me nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I wanted you to know," Sebastian whispered, "that even when I was living in the dark, you were the only light I ever looked for."
May you like
I stood up, walked around the desk, and wrapped my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest. He held me tightly, his heart beating a strong, steady rhythm against my cheek.
"I forgive you, Sebastian," I whispered into his shirt. "I forgive you."
