Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Patriarch

The executive boardroom on the 80th floor of Vale Tower was a monument to old-money power. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a commanding view of Manhattan, while a massive mahogany table was surrounded by fifteen of the most influential board members in corporate America.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Vale. At eighty-two years old, he was a formidable man with snow-white hair, sharp blue eyes, and an aura of absolute authority. Beside him sat Clarissa Hart's father, Senator Richard Hart, both men laughing softly over cigars.

"The merger with Hart Enterprises will be finalized by Friday," Arthur was saying in his commanding baritone. "And Sebastian’s wedding next month will secure our control over the eastern shipping corridors—"

BANG!

The double oak doors of the boardroom were thrown open with such violent force that one of the heavy brass handles shattered against the marble wall.

Every board member jumped in their seats.

Sebastian walked into the room, his stride long and purposeful, his presence suffocating the entire space. Behind him came Marcus, two armed security officers, and me.

"Sebastian?" Arthur frowned, his thick eyebrows knitting together in annoyance. "What is the meaning of this interruption? We are in the middle of a strategic board vote."

"The vote is canceled, Arthur," Sebastian said, stepping up to the foot of the massive board table.

Clarissa, who was sitting near her father, gasped when she saw me standing behind Sebastian. "Dad! That's her! That's the woman from Central Park!"

Senator Hart stood up, pointing a finger at Sebastian. "Sebastian, what is going on here? Clarissa came home crying hysterically, claiming you abandoned her for an ex-wife!"

Sebastian ignored the Senator entirely. He reached into his coat, pulled out a thick leather folder, and tossed it onto the center of the mahogany table. It slid across the polished wood, stopping right in front of Arthur.

"Open it," Sebastian commanded softly.

Arthur didn't flinch. He maintained his regal posture, looking down at the folder with mild distaste. "I don't play games, Sebastian. Take your personal drama out of my boardroom."

"I said OPEN IT!" Sebastian screamed, slamming his fist down on the table so hard that crystal water glasses shattered, spraying ice and water across the documents of horrified board members.

The room fell into a terrified silence. No one had ever heard Sebastian Vale raise his voice to his grandfather.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed. Slowly, deliberately, he opened the folder.

Inside were the intercepted letters, the faked medical records from the Boston clinic, the offshore bank transfer logs, and the signed security orders from Thomas Vance.

Arthur's face remained impassive as he flipped through the pages. For a man who had orchestrated corporate takeovers for half a century, a paper trail was just another problem to be solved.

"So," Arthur said quietly, closing the folder and leaning back in his leather chair. "You found out."

"You lied to me," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that sent chills through every person present. "You told me she terminated the pregnancy. You hid my children from me."

Arthur let out a cold, dismissive sigh. "I saved you from a massive mistake, Sebastian. You were the heir to a multi-billion-dollar dynasty! You were supposed to marry a woman of status—a Hart, a Rockefeller, a DuPont! Instead, you secretly married a penniless orphan with no connections!"

"She was my wife!" Sebastian roared.

"She was a distraction!" Arthur countered, standing up and leaning over the table, his old eyes flashing with ruthless conviction. "A weakness! Look at what happened the moment you married her—you became soft! You talked about leaving the firm, moving to the countryside, starting a quiet life! You were throwing away the Vale legacy for a fantasy!"

Arthur turned his sharp gaze toward me, pointing a trembling, age-spotted finger at my face.

"I offered her five million dollars to stay away from you," Arthur spat. "When she refused, I did what was necessary to protect this family. She was unfit to carry the Vale name!"

I stepped forward, breaking past Marcus, and walked straight up to Arthur Vale.

"I didn't want your money, Arthur," I said, my voice ringing clear and steady through the quiet room. "I wanted the man I loved. And those three children you tried to erase? They are stronger, kinder, and infinitely better human beings than you could ever hope to be."

Arthur snorted in disgust. "They are bastards born in Queens—"

CLACK.

The sound of a heavy steel firearm being cocked echoed sharply through the boardroom.

Everyone gasped.

Sebastian had pulled a suppressed 9mm handgun from Marcus's holster and had it aimed directly at the center of his grandfather's forehead.
