Chapter 2 - The Fall of the King

The air in the Coastal Athletics Martial Arts Center turned heavy enough to choke on. The other students backed away until their shoulders pressed against the drywall, creating a wide, improvised ring around the center mat.
Trent was breathing heavily through his nose, his knuckles white as he bounced on his toes. He was 190 pounds of dense, aggressive muscle, trained in point-sparring rules that emphasized speed and surface contact. He thought he was a apex predator. He didn't realize he was standing in front of a girl who had been trained in Kyokushin—where there are no pads, no stopping for points, and no mercy until someone stops breathing or surrenders.
"Rules are simple," Trent hissed, glaring down at her. "Light contact to the head, full contact to the body. First one to yield loses."
"Understood," Holland said quietly. She didn't put on gloves. She simply brought her small fists up to shield her chin, tucking her elbows tightly against her ribs to protect her liver and solar plexus. Her stance was low, wide, and immovable.
Sensei Graham stood at the edge of the mat, his clipboard trembling slightly in his grip. "Begin!"
Trent exploded forward instantly.
He wanted a quick, brutal knockout to restore his pride. He launched a heavy right roundhouse kick aimed straight at Holland’s left ribs. It was a kick meant to break bones, packed with all 190 pounds of his momentum.
Holland didn't step back.
Instead, she stepped into the strike.
As Trent’s shin swung through the air, Holland slid forward inside the arc of his kick, shortening his range. She absorbed the reduced impact on her left shoulder, unbothered, while simultaneously driving a lightning-fast, bone-crushing low leg kick (gedan mawashi geri) straight into the inner flesh of Trent’s standing support leg.
THWACK!
Her heel drove into his femoral nerve with the precision of a surgeon's scalpel.
Trent let out an involuntary scream as his standing leg instantly buckled beneath him. The power in his own kick vanished, and he crashed heavily onto his knee, his eyes watering in agony.
Before he could process what had happened, Holland shifted her weight. Her left leg whipped upward in a fluid, continuous motion, rising past his shoulder with terrifying speed. Her heel stopped a quarter-inch from his nose—a perfect, controlled oroshi kakato geri (axe kick).
The draft of wind from her foot blew the fringe of hair away from Trent's forehead.
If she had let the kick fall, she would have crushed his nose and jaw straight into the back of his skull. But her foot hovered there, perfectly motionless, suspended by terrifying core control.
Silence held the dojo in a vice grip. Nobody breathed.
"Yield?" Holland asked softly, looking down at him.
Trent looked up at the tiny fourteen-year-old girl. His leg was completely numb, burning with a deep, paralyzing agony. The white belt hanging from her waist no longer looked like a beginner's badge—it looked like a insult to everyone in the room who wore black.
"I... I yield," Trent choked out, his head hanging low as tears of frustration welled in his eyes.
May you like
Holland retracted her leg smoothly, brought her feet together, bowed deeply from the waist, and whispered, "Osu."
She turned toward Sensei Graham, who was staring at her as if she had just dropped from outer space. "May I be excused, Sensei? I think I'm in the wrong class after all."
