Chapter 7 - The Road to Orlando

The next two weeks were a blur of grueling, relentless preparation.

Every morning at 5:00 AM, before the tropical heat made the air unbreathable, Holland ran five miles along the damp sands of the coastline, her feet digging into the wet surf to build explosive ankle strength.

Every afternoon, she was at Coastal Athletics. Graham had completely transformed his schedule to accommodate her. He had brought in heavy leather water-filled bags, concrete breaking blocks, and high-tensile resistance bands.

Trent, whose knee was rapidly healing, had volunteered to be her primary sparring partner. The arrogance that had once defined him was completely gone, replaced by a deep, protective brotherly respect.

"You're dropping your left elbow when you throw the low kick, Holland," Trent noted one afternoon, holding a heavy leather shield against his chest as Holland delivered her hundredth kick of the hour. BAM! "Better. Keep it tight. Don't give those Miami fighters an opening."

"Thanks, Trent," Holland panted, wiping sweat from her forehead with her sleeve.

"Hey," Trent said gently, lowering the pad. "I never apologized properly for the first day you walked in here. I was a real jackass. I thought because I was bigger and older, I owned the world."

Holland looked at him, offering a rare, small smile. "It's okay. You made me remember why I fight."

"Why do you fight?" Trent asked curiously.

Holland looked out the window at her mother, who was sitting in Graham's office, helping him organize the gym's chaotic accounting software. For the first time in months, her mother was smiling. She looked younger, lighter, as if the suffocating weight of the divorce had finally begun to lift.

"I fight so my mom doesn't have to cry when she opens the mail," Holland said softly.

Trent nodded solemnly, raising the pad again. "Then let's make sure you win that ten grand. Again! From the top!"
