Chapter 8 - The Tournament of Fire

The Orlando Convention Center was an ocean of noise, lights, and adrenaline.

Over two thousand competitors from across the southeastern United States filled the vast arena. Twelve raised fighting rings occupied the concrete floor, surrounded by towering bleachers packed with shouting crowds, flashing cameras, and echoing loudspeakers announcing match results.

For Holland, the environment was a nightmare of sensory overload.

She sat in the warm-up area behind the main stage, her oversized hoodie pulled up over her head, her knees pulled tight against her chest as she focused on her breathing. The social anxiety was a heavy stone sitting on her heart.

"Deep breaths, kiddo," Graham said, sitting beside her and handing her a bottle of electrolyte water. "You belong here."

"There are so many people, Sensei," Holland whispered, her hands trembling inside her sleeves.

"They aren't here to look at you, Holland," Sarah said, crouching in front of her daughter and taking her cold hands in hers. "They're just noise. When you step onto that mat, it's just you and your spirit. Show them who you are, Holland. Show them what my daughter can do."

"Division 14! Open-Weight Full-Contact Female Division! Report to Ring 3!" the loudspeaker blared.

Holland stood up. She pulled off her hoodie, revealing her white gi and her worn black belt.

As she walked out toward Ring 3, she passed the Miami contingent. Standing at the edge of the mat was Victor Cruz, and beside him stood his star pupil—a nineteen-year-old nightmare named Natasha "The Vixen" Petrov.

Natasha was 5'11", broad-shouldered, with a fierce, scarred eyebrow and an undefeated record of 18-0 in regional kickboxing. She was towering, imposing, and wore an expression of cold, merciless killer instinct.

"Look at that," Natasha laughed as Holland walked past, her voice loud enough for the surrounding crowd to hear. "They sent a little girl to fight me. Don't worry, kid, I'll try not to hurt you too badly before your bedtime."

Holland didn't reply. She climbed the steps onto the raised ring mat, bowed to the referee, and took her place in the corner.
