Chapter 2 - The Lion's Den of the Law

By the third day, Catherine was discharged from the hospital. She stood in the lobby, holding Grace in her infant car seat, wrapped in a soft pink blanket. Rachel was beside her, holding a diaper bag, but they weren't going back to the luxury suburban home Catherine had shared with Michael. Instead, they were heading to a secure high-rise apartment in downtown Philadelphia that Rachel had secured through her corporate contacts.

As they walked toward the sliding glass doors, a tall, imposing figure stepped out from the waiting area. Michael Harrison stood there, his designer suit slightly wrinkled, his face a mixture of anxiety and defensive anger.

"Catherine," Michael said, stepping forward, his hands raised in a placating gesture. "Please, just let me see my daughter. Let me talk to you. You can't just cut me out like this because of a misunderstanding."

Catherine stopped, shielding Grace behind her. Rachel instantly stepped in front of her sister like a bodyguard.

"Stay back, Michael," Rachel spat. "If you step one foot closer, I will scream for the hospital security, and I’ll make sure the local news gets the footage of the prominent real estate mogul being dragged out in handcuffs."

Michael ignored Rachel, his eyes locked on Catherine. "Catherine, Amber was out of line. I fired her. I swear to God, I fired her the moment I realized what she said to you. She was drunk, she was jealous because she’s had a crush on me for months, and she took my phone while I was asleep in the guest cabin. Nothing happened between us! You have to believe me. Eleven years, Catherine. You’re going to throw away eleven years over one mistake by an assistant?"

Catherine looked at the man she had loved for over a decade. The illusion was completely gone. She didn't see the charming, successful husband anymore. She saw a pathetic, manipulative coward who was terrified of losing his pristine public reputation and his control over her.

"I don't believe a single word that comes out of your mouth, Michael," Catherine said, her voice steady and clear, drawing the attention of several people in the lobby. "And you didn't fire Amber. Rachel’s friend saw her car parked in your driveway this morning. You are still lying, even now when you're looking at your child for the first time."

Michael's face darkened, his desperate facade slipping to reveal the arrogant, controlling man underneath. "Catherine, be reasonable. You have no income. You haven't worked since we got married because you wanted to focus on charity events. If you file for divorce, I will make sure you get nothing. You’ll be living in a cramped apartment, unable to afford diapers, while I keep the house, the assets, and eventually, custody of Grace. Don't play a game you can't win."

"She isn't playing a game, Mr. Harrison. And she’s definitely not alone," a deep, authoritative voice remarked.

Daniel Brooks walked out from the elevator bay, wearing his civilian clothes—a sharp charcoal overcoat and leather boots. He walked over to Catherine's side, his presence instantly shifting the power dynamic in the room.

Michael eyed Daniel with immediate hostility. "And who the hell are you? Her doctor? I suggest you stay out of family matters before I file a complaint with the hospital board for professional misconduct."

"I am Dr. Brooks," Daniel said, stepping forward, his tall frame easily eclipsing Michael’s. His voice was calm but carried a lethal promise of authority. "And as her attending physician, I witnessed the severe emotional distress your actions caused during her high-risk delivery. If you continue to harass my patient on hospital property, I will personally sign the affidavit for a temporary restraining order, using the hospital’s security footage of this interaction as primary evidence. I suggest you walk away."

Michael stared at Daniel, his jaw clenching. He looked at Catherine, then at the baby, realizing he was completely outnumbered and outmatched in this public space.

"This isn't over, Catherine," Michael hissed, turning on his heel and marching out of the hospital doors into the cold morning air.

Catherine let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding, her shoulders relaxing. She looked up at Daniel, her eyes filled with gratitude. "You didn't have to do that, Daniel. You’ve already done so much for us."

"I told you, Catherine," Daniel said, his eyes warm as he looked down at her. "I'm going to make sure you and Grace are safe. Now, let’s get you home. The real work starts today, and I’ve already contacted the best family law attorney in the state."
