Chapter 9 - The First Steps

Spring arrived in Philadelphia with a burst of color. The cherry blossoms in the park were in full bloom, and the air was warm and sweet.
Grace was now over a year old, a happy, energetic toddler with her mother’s green eyes and a bright, infectious laugh. She had begun to crawl at a lightning pace, keeping both Catherine and Daniel constantly on their toes.
One Saturday afternoon, they were sitting in the backyard garden of their brownstone. Daniel had built a small wooden sandbox for Grace, and he was currently sitting in the grass, helping her build a "castle" out of plastic cups.
Catherine sat on the wooden bench, a book in her lap, watching them with a deep, peaceful joy.
Suddenly, Grace stood up, gripping the edge of the sandbox with her tiny hands. She looked at Daniel, who was sitting a few feet away, holding his arms out.
"Come on, Gracie," Daniel coaxed, his voice warm and encouraging. "You can do it. Just one step."
Grace took a deep breath, her little legs shaking slightly. She let go of the sandbox, took one shaky step forward, then another, and then tumbled directly into Daniel’s waiting arms, laughing hysterically.
"You did it!" Daniel cheered, picking her up and spinning her in the air while Grace squealed with delight.
He walked over to Catherine, placing the laughing toddler in her lap, and sat down beside her, wrapping an arm around Catherine’s shoulders.
"She’s growing so fast," Catherine murmured, kissing Grace’s soft cheek.
"She’s strong, Catherine," Daniel said, kissing the top of Catherine's head. "Just like her mother."
"We’re strong because we have you, Daniel," Catherine said softly, leaning her head against his shoulder. "You gave us a foundation to stand on."
"No," Daniel smiled, looking down at them. "You gave me a home. For a long time, my life was just work, hospital corridors, and quiet empty rooms. You and Grace... you made me realize what life is actually about."
He reached into his pocket, his hand clenching around a small velvet box he had been carrying for weeks. He looked at Catherine, his eyes filled with a deep, unwavering devotion.
"Catherine," he said, his voice dropping into a soft, serious register. "I know we’ve taken things slow, and I wanted to make sure you were completely healed. But I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you and Grace never have to face a storm alone. Will you marry me?"
Catherine stared at the beautiful, simple platinum band in the box. She looked at Daniel, the man who had walked into her hospital room as a stranger and had become her entire world.

"Yes, Daniel," Catherine cried, her face lighting up with a radiant, beautiful smile. "A thousand times, yes."
Grace clapped her hands, laughing as if she understood the significance of the moment, and Daniel pulled them both into a tight, warm embrace that felt like the safest place on earth.
