Chapter 7 - The Unravelling of an Empire

The fallout from the deposition was swift and catastrophic for Michael Harrison.
The European investment trust pulled out of the merger within twenty-four hours of the deposition transcripts being leaked to the business press. The board of directors of Harrison Group held an emergency meeting and voted unanimously to strip Michael of his title as CEO, replacing him with his regional rival.
The luxury suburban mansion was put on the market as part of the asset liquidation, and the local news was filled with reports of the fall of the real estate titan.
One afternoon, Catherine was walking through the park near her apartment, pushing Grace in her stroller. The autumn leaves were turning bright shades of gold and red, and the air was crisp and clean.
She saw a figure sitting on a bench near the fountain, wearing a faded coat, his head in his hands.
It was Michael.
He looked ten years older. His hair was messy, his face unshaven, and the arrogant swagger that had defined him for eleven years was completely gone.
Catherine stopped a few feet away. She didn't feel hatred anymore. She didn't even feel anger. Looking at him, she only felt a profound sense of pity for a man who had traded everything that truly mattered for a hollow illusion of power.
Michael looked up, his eyes widening as he saw her. He stood up slowly, his eyes drifting to the stroller where Grace was sleeping.
"Catherine," he whispered, his voice cracking. "Can I... can I see her?"
Catherine stepped back, placing a protective hand on the stroller's handle. "No, Michael. The court has granted me sole temporary custody. You have supervised visitation rights starting next month, provided you complete the court-ordered alcohol rehabilitation program. Until then, you cannot be near her."
Michael let out a dry, broken laugh, tears filling his eyes. "I lost everything, Catherine. The company, the house, my reputation. Even Amber left town after she was fired. I have nothing."
"You had everything, Michael," Catherine said, her voice quiet but filled with an undeniable truth. "You had a wife who loved you for eleven years. You had a beautiful daughter who was waiting to meet her father. You chose to walk away from that for a quiet night at a cabin with your assistant. You didn't lose your life, Michael. You threw it away."
She turned the stroller around and began to walk away, her steps firm and confident.

"Catherine, please!" Michael called out behind her, his voice desperate. "I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!"
But the wind carried his words away, and Catherine didn't look back. The man who had abandoned her in the storm was now just a ghost in her past, and she was walking toward a bright, beautiful future.
