Chapter 4 - A Beacon in the Night

The transition to the downtown apartment was difficult. Catherine spent her days caring for Grace, her nights filled with the exhausting routine of a single mother. She was constantly tired, her mind racing with the upcoming court dates and the looming threat of Michael’s retaliation.

But she wasn't entirely alone.

Every evening at 7:00 p.m., there was a soft knock on her door. It was Daniel.

He didn't come as a doctor, but as a friend. He would bring fresh groceries, a warm meal from a local bistro, or sometimes just a quiet presence. He would take Grace, holding her against his chest with an ease that came from years of working with infants, allowing Catherine to take a long, uninterrupted shower or sleep for an hour.

One rainy Friday evening, they sat on the small balcony of the apartment, watching the city lights glitter through the mist. Grace was asleep in her crib inside, and the apartment was filled with the comforting scent of chamomile tea.

"You don't have to keep doing this, Daniel," Catherine said softly, her hands wrapped around her warm mug. "You have a demanding job at the hospital. You shouldn't be spending your free time helping a stressed-out single mother."

Daniel looked at her, his dark eyes reflecting the soft glow of the city. "I want to be here, Catherine. When I was in that delivery room with you... I saw a woman fighting with everything she had, despite being abandoned by the person who was supposed to protect her. I’ve seen a lot of tragedy in my line of work, but I’ve rarely seen that kind of strength. You inspired me."

Catherine looked down, a warm blush rising to her cheeks. "I didn't feel strong. I felt terrified."

"That’s what real strength is," Daniel said, reaching out to place his warm hand over hers. "It’s being terrified but moving forward anyway. One step at a time. One breath at a time."

The touch of his hand sent a gentle shiver through Catherine. It was different from Michael’s cold, calculated touches. Daniel’s touch was warm, protective, and filled with a genuine respect that she had never experienced before.

"Daniel..." she began, her voice a soft whisper.

"I know it’s too soon, Catherine," he said gently, his thumb tracing the back of her hand. "You're going through a war, and you need time to heal. I don't expect anything from you. I just want to be the person who holds the umbrella while you fight the storm."

Tears filled Catherine's eyes, but this time, they were tears of relief and hope. For the first time in years, she felt like she was worth protecting.

Their quiet moment was shattered by the loud, persistent buzzing of the apartment building's intercom.

Catherine’s heart clenched. She walked into the living room and pressed the speaker button. "Who is it?"

"Catherine, open the gate!" Michael’s voice roared through the speaker, distorted by the static but dripping with drunken rage. "I know you're up there! I know you have that doctor with you! Open this damn door or I’m going to kick it down!"
