Chapter 5 - THE BREAKING OF GLENDA

On Thursday morning, the luxurious, comfortable world Glenda Vance had constructed for herself began to disintegrate piece by piece.

Glenda lived in a modest, elegant townhouse in the suburbs of Pittsford, a high-end neighborhood where she spent her afternoons playing bridge at the country club and boasting to her neighbors about her son's vast wealth and high-flying financial career.

At 10:30 AM, while Glenda was in her front yard trimming her rosebushes, a unmarked black sedan pulled up to the curb.

Two agents from the New York State Attorney General’s Division of Financial Crimes stepped out, carrying a court-ordered search warrant and a freeze order for her personal assets.

"Glenda Vance?" the lead agent asked, displaying his badge.

Glenda dropped her pruning shears into the mulch, her face going pale. "What... what is the meaning of this? Who are you?!"

"We are executing a search warrant in connection with an ongoing investigation into wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate tax evasion associated with Vance Wealth Management and Glenda Vance Consulting LLC," the agent announced calmly.

Within minutes, two more police cruisers arrived. Neighbors gathered on their lawns, pointing and whispering as state investigators walked out of Glenda’s front door carrying her desktop computer, boxes of financial files, and designer handbags purchased using funds from the fraudulent consulting account.

Frantic, her hands shaking uncontrollably, Glenda pulled out her cell phone and speed-dialed Philip.

"Philip! Philip, answer the phone!" she shrieked into the receiver the moment he picked up.

"Mom, I can't talk right now!" Philip’s voice was wild, background noise echoing with shouting and chaotic office chatter. "The SEC just walked into our corporate headquarters with federal marshals! They're auditing every ledger in the building! Arthur just suspended me without pay!"

"Philip, the state police are at my house!" Glenda screamed, collapsing onto her porch steps as her neighbors watched. "They’re taking my computer! They frozen my bank cards! I went to buy groceries an hour ago and my card was declined!"

"What?!" Philip gasped. "How do they have your accounts?!"

"It was Demi!" Glenda wailed, tears finally streaming down her face, ruining her makeup. "It was that horrible, vengeful girl! She gave them everything! Philip, do something! Call your lawyers!"

"With what money, Mom?!" Philip screamed back, his voice cracking under total panic. "Vanessa’s father just pulled his legal firm from representing me! The bank froze the Lake Placid house, the Rochester equity line is locked, and my personal accounts are down to four hundred dollars! She took everything! She took every single thing!"

Before Glenda could respond, the lead state agent walked down her porch steps and stood over her.

"Glenda Vance, you are being served with a formal subpoena to appear before a grand jury in Monroe County on Tuesday at 9:00 AM," he said, handing her a thick packet of legal papers. "And pursuant to the temporary protective order issued by Judge Miller, you are formally prohibited from contacting Demi Lin-Vance directly or through third parties. If you call her, text her, or go near her residence or place of work, you will be remanded to county jail immediately."

Glenda sat on her concrete steps, holding the legal subpoena in her trembling, dirt-stained hands.

The arrogant, cruel woman who had thrown a cast-iron pot at her daughter-in-law’s head was gone. In her place sat a terrified, broke, and disgraced woman watching her entire life turn to ash.
