Chapter 7 - THE CRUMBILING OF THE CO-CONSPIRATORS

By late October, the dominoes set in motion on Demi’s birthday were falling with devastating velocity.
The fallout extended far beyond Philip and Glenda. Vanessa Miller, who had spent months boasting about her luxurious lifestyle and mocking Demi’s career, found herself caught in a legal nightmare of her own making.
Because Vanessa had signed multiple corporate documents as a managing partner of Vance Development Group to secure tax write-offs for her personal interior design business, federal investigators named her as a co-respondent in the civil fraud lawsuit.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Paige called Demi with a major update while Demi was analyzing quarterly clinic data.
"Demi, you're not going to believe what just happened at the courthouse," Paige said, her voice rich with laughter.
"Fill me in," Demi said, leaning back in her office chair.
"Vanessa Miller’s father—the high-powered senior partner at Miller & Hayes—just formally withdrew his firm from representing Philip and Glenda," Paige revealed. "Apparently, when Mr. Miller discovered that Philip had used his daughter’s name to launder $60,000 in unauthorized real estate draws, he had a massive blow-up in the courthouse lobby. He publicly disowned Philip, told him he was going to prison, and then fired Vanessa from her position at his firm to protect his company's reputation!"
Demi shook her head gently. "And Vanessa?"
"Vanessa is currently being sued by First New York Bank for $110,000 in personal guarantee liabilities she signed for the Lake Placid kitchen renovations," Paige added. "Her luxury car lease was repossessed yesterday morning right out of her father's driveway."
"What about Philip’s criminal case?" Demi asked.
"His public defender—because he can no longer afford a private attorney—is negotiating a guilty plea with the District Attorney," Paige said, her tone becoming businesslike. "He’s looking at thirty-six months in state prison for grand larceny and felony tax fraud, plus full financial restitution orders."
"And Glenda?"
"Glenda signed a deferred prosecution agreement this morning," Paige stated. "To avoid prison time as an accessory, she agreed to forfeit her townhouse in Pittsford to cover her portion of the back taxes and legal penalties. She’s moving into a tiny one-bedroom basement apartment in West Rochester next week, living entirely on a minimum social security check."
Demi sat in silence for a moment, letting the information wash over her.
Two months ago, those three people had stood in her life like an insurmountable wall of arrogance, cruelty, and emotional abuse. They had treated her as an invisible, disposable servant in her own home. Now, their combined malice had completely dismantled their own lives, leaving them with nothing but the wreckage of their own greed.

"Demi? Are you okay?" Paige asked softly over the line.
"I'm better than okay, Paige," Demi said, a genuine, warm smile spreading across her face. "I'm finally free."
