Chapter 6 - THE LAKE PLACID SIEGE

On Friday morning, Demi decided it was time to visit the Adirondacks.
Accompanied by Paige, a local sheriff’s deputy, and a commercial locksmith, Demi drove up to the picturesque mountain town of Lake Placid. The drive up Route 73 was quiet and beautiful, the autumn leaves turning brilliant shades of crimson and gold against the mountain peaks.
The Lake Placid house was a beautiful three-story timber frame chalet overlooking the water, featuring expansive wrap-around decks, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a private dock. Demi had spent three summers painting the exterior siding, designing the stone fireplace, and planting the perennial gardens herself.
When their SUV pulled into the gravel driveway, they found Philip’s luxury German sports car parked in front of the garage.
Sitting on the front porch, drinking coffee from one of Demi’s custom ceramic mugs, was Philip. He looked terrible. His hair was unwashed, his designer suit was replaced by a crumpled hoodie, and dark circles hollowed his eyes.
Beside him sat two packed suitcases.
As Demi stepped out of the vehicle, the crisp mountain air filling her lungs, Philip slowly stood up. He didn't yell. He didn't threaten. The fight had been completely beaten out of him.
"Deputy," Paige said to the officer accompanying them, "we are here to execute the court-ordered asset preservation order and change the locks on the structure under the preliminary receivership decree."
The deputy nodded and walked up the steps, standing beside Philip. "Mr. Vance, you need to step off the porch and clear your personal items from the premises."
Philip didn't look at the deputy. His eyes were fixed entirely on Demi, who stood at the foot of the porch steps, dressed in a warm woolen coat, looking at him with a calm, unbothered expression.
"Demi..." Philip’s voice was raspy, hollowed out by days of non-stop terror. "Please. Just talk to me for five minutes. No lawyers. Just you and me."
"I have nothing to say to you, Philip," Demi said smoothly.
"Demi, they’re going to indict me," Philip whispered, stepping to the edge of the porch railing, his voice cracking with emotion. "The firm fired me yesterday. The SEC is freezing my license. The state prosecutor is talking about a five-year prison sentence for wire fraud. My mother is having panic attacks every hour. Vanessa won't even answer my texts!"
"You built this house on lies, Philip," Demi replied, her tone devoid of malice, yet completely unyielding. "You used my grandmother’s legacy—money meant to secure my future—to build a playground for your infidelity and fraud. Did you really think you could treat me like garbage forever and never face the consequences?"
"I made a mistake!" Philip cried out, tears finally spilling down his hollow cheeks. "I got caught up in trying to look successful! My mom kept pushing me, Vanessa kept demanding more money... I was stupid! But I loved you, Demi! I still love you!"
Demi looked at him—really looked at him—and felt a profound sense of lightness in her chest.
"You didn't love me, Philip," she said softly. "You loved having a safety net. You loved having a quiet, forgiving woman who cleaned up your messes and paid off your debts while you played the big man. But that safety net is gone now."
The locksmith stepped up onto the porch, his heavy tool bag clanking against the wooden steps, and began dismantling the deadbolt on the front door.
"You have ten minutes to take your clothes and leave the property, Mr. Vance," the deputy instructed firmly, touching his holster. "Let's go."
Philip stood there for a long moment, staring at Demi, waiting for some sign of hesitation, some tiny flicker of the gentle, overly compliant woman he had taken advantage of for five years.

He found nothing. Her eyes were as clear and unbreakable as diamonds.
Defeated, Philip picked up his two suitcases, slunk down the porch steps, and walked toward his car without looking back.
