Chapter 8 - THE AUCTION OF RECOVERY
Three months later, in early January, a bright, crisp winter sun shone over the court-ordered public auction held at the Monroe County Courthouse.
The remaining marital assets and seized property of Philip Vance were being liquidated to satisfy bank liens, legal fees, and Demi’s full financial restitution.
Demi sat in the second row of the gallery, wearing a tailored navy wool coat and a cream scarf, looking radiant, healthy, and completely composed. Beside her sat Paige and Marcus, the clinic security chief who had become a trusted friend.
At the front of the gallery sat Philip, wearing a faded orange county correctional jumpsuit, handcuffed at the wrists, sitting beside his court-appointed public defender. In the back row, huddled in a worn coat and looking twenty years older, sat Glenda. She refused to make eye contact with anyone, her eyes fixed miserably on the floor.
The auctioneer raised his gavel.
"Item Number 4," the auctioneer announced crisp, professional voice. "The full equitable title and primary equity interest in the real property situated at Lake Placid, NY, free and clear of all secondary mortgage encumbrances, pursuant to the judicial restitution order in favor of Demi Lin-Vance."
"We open bidding at two hundred thousand dollars," the auctioneer stated.
A land developer in the third row raised his paddle. "Two hundred."
"Two hundred and fifty," another voice called out.
Paige calmly raised Demi’s paddle. "Four hundred thousand."
The room went quiet. The other bidders looked around. Four hundred thousand dollars was the exact amount required to clear the remaining primary mortgage and return every dollar of Demi’s stolen inheritance, plus interest.
"Four hundred thousand going once... twice... sold to the plaintiff, Demi Lin-Vance!" The gavel crashed down.
Philip buried his face in his handcuffed hands, a soft, pathetic sob escaping his chest. Glenda pulled her collar tighter around her neck and silently slunk out the back door of the courtroom before the proceedings even finished.
Demi stood up, unbuttoned her coat, and shook Paige’s hand.
Under the terms of the final divorce decree and restitution ruling signed by Judge Miller that morning:
Full Ownership: Demi retained 100% sole ownership of the Rochester apartment on Elmwood Avenue, completely unencumbered by any joint debt.
Lake Placid Property: The Lake Placid chalets were transferred entirely into Demi’s name, free of liens, which she intended to sell to a local conservation group for a profit of over $600,000.
Financial Restitution: Every dollar Philip had taken from her inheritance trust was restored through seized corporate funds.
Complete Separation: A permanent, lifetime order of protection was enacted, prohibiting Philip, Glenda, or Vanessa from ever approaching Demi again.
As the deputies led Philip away through the side door toward the transport van that would take him to the state correctional facility, he paused and looked back at Demi one last time.

He didn't see anger in her eyes. He didn't see hatred.
He saw absolute indifference. To Demi, he was no longer a threat, a husband, or a source of pain. He was simply a closed chapter in a book she had long since finished reading.
