Chapter 10 - The Promise at the Gates

One Year Later
The spring sun shone bright over the rolling hills of Tennessee. The Thorne estate was filled with the sounds of classical music, soft laughter, and the joyful barking of dogs.
Under a sweeping white canopy erected on the front lawn, a grand wedding ceremony was taking place.
Cora stood before a flower-adorned altar in a breathtaking, simple white silk gown with a long lace veil that drifted gently in the warm spring breeze. She looked like a vision of pure elegance and beauty, holding a bouquet of white roses and lavender.
Standing opposite her was Gabriel Thorne, looking impossibly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo. His eyes held no coldness, no lingering shadows—only an infinite, bottomless love for the woman standing before him.
Sitting proudly beside Gabriel as his best man was Nero. The massive mastiff wore a custom black leather collar adorned with a silver bow tie, sitting regal and proud, his broad chest held high, his tail thumping rhythmically against the grass.
Old Julian sat in the front row, glowing with pride, holding the hand of Cora’s close friend Sarah, the public defender who was now the chief legal counsel for the rescue foundation.
"Cora," Gabriel said, holding her hands tightly as they exchanged their vows, his voice rich and steady. "You came into my life when I thought power was the only thing worth fighting for. You showed me that true power lies in mercy, in protection, and in love. I promise to spend every day of my life standing as your shield, loving you with everything I am."
Cora smiled through her joyful tears. "Gabriel, you gave me a voice when I was silenced, a home when I was lost, and a love I never dared to dream of. I am yours, forever."
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant declared warmly.
Gabriel pulled Cora gently into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her deeply under the clear blue sky, amidst thunderous applause and cheers from their family, staff, and friends.
Nero let out a loud, triumphant roar that echoed across the lawn, making all the guests laugh as he trotted up to press his massive head against their joined hands.
Later that evening, as the stars twinkled above the estate, Gabriel and Cora walked hand in hand down the long stone driveway toward the front gates.
The heavy black iron gates stood wide open, welcoming the soft night breeze. The dark shadows of the past were completely gone, replaced by the warm light glowing from every window of the mansion behind them.
Cora stopped near the entrance, looking up at the high iron spikes she had once stared at with holes in her shoes, terrified and alone.
Gabriel wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder, his chest warm against her back. Nero trotted ahead, sitting contentedly at the open gate, looking out over the quiet hills.
"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Thorne?" Gabriel whispered into her ear, kissing her cheek softly.
Cora leaned back against his strong chest, taking a deep, peaceful breath of the lavender-scented night air, her heart full and completely at peace.

"I was thinking that the gates used to be here to keep the world out," Cora smiled, turning in his arms to look up into his winter-hazel eyes. "But now... they're just here to welcome us home."
Gabriel smiled, leaning down to press his lips against hers, sealing their forever promise under the quiet, starlit sky.
