Chapter 9 - The Foundation of Light

Six months later.
The Thorne estate had undergone a breathtaking transformation. The gloomy, oppressive iron gates that had once made people feel small were repainted, surrounded by sprawling gardens of white hydrangeas and lavender. The dark security barracks had been converted into the Vance-Walsh Canine Rescue and Rehabilitation Center—a state-of-the-art facility funded by the Thorne logistics group, dedicated to saving abused, high-risk security animals from across the country.
Cora sat at a sunlit wooden desk inside the facility's main office, reviewing adoption applications. She looked vibrant, healthy, and radiant, dressed in a tailored green linen dress that complemented her warm brown hair.
Through the large glass windows, she watched Nero trotting happily across the green lawn, supervising three young mastiff puppies that were tumbling over each other in the grass. The terrifying 140-pound monster that people had once wanted to put down was now the gentlest uncle the rescue had ever seen.
The door clicked open. Gabriel walked into the office.
He had shed his formal three-piece suit for a dark cashmere sweater and trousers, looking relaxed, younger, and deeply content. He walked over to her desk, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her lips.
"You're working too hard," Gabriel murmured against her mouth.
"I have twelve applications for the new Shepherd mix," Cora smiled, resting her hands against his chest. "I have to make sure they're going to good homes."
"Every animal that enters this property goes to a good home, Cora," Gabriel said softly, reaching into his pocket. "Including the ones that stay."
He pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, opening it to reveal a vintage ring—a brilliant, cushion-cut emerald surrounded by platinum diamonds that had once belonged to Gabriel’s grandmother, the original matriarch of the Thorne family.
Cora’s breath caught in her throat. She looked from the breathtaking ring up into Gabriel’s pale hazel eyes, which were filled with an intense, burning devotion.
"Gabriel..." she whispered.
"Two years ago, you walked through those gates looking for a job," Gabriel said, taking her hand into his. "I want you to stay here for the rest of my life as my wife. I want to build a world with you, Cora—a world filled with light, purpose, and the love you were denied for far too long."

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled down Cora’s cheeks. "Yes," she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Gabriel! A thousand times yes!"
Gabriel pulled her tight against his chest, kissing her deeply as the afternoon sun washed over the room in pure, golden warmth.
