Chapter 4 - War in the East Wing

The return to the Thorne estate was not a peaceful homecoming; it was a militarized takeover.
When the convoy pulled through the iron gates, Cora noticed immediately that the atmosphere had changed. The lazy, arrogant guards Damon had hired were gone, replaced by Gabriel’s silent, sharp-eyed operatives stationed every fifty yards along the perimeter.
Cora reinstated herself in the kennels immediately. She spent the afternoon cleaning Nero’s enclosure, preparing his special cooked diet, and tending to two young German Shepherds that Damon’s staff had neglected. Nero refused to leave her side, shadowing her every step like a 140-pound dark protective cloud.
At six in the evening, as rain began to patter against the slate roof of the staff quarters, a loud crash echoed from the main house's glass conservatory.
Nero instantly stood up, his ears pinning back, a low rumble rising from his chest. Cora grabbed a flashlight and a tactical leash, following the dog as he trotted briskly toward the main residence.
Inside the grand parlor, furniture had been overturned. Damon Thorne stood by the grand fireplace, his tie undone, his face flushed red with alcohol and rage. He was yelling at Margaret Thorne, his mother, who sat on the velvet sofa, trembling behind her glass of sherry.
Standing near the doorway, perfectly composed with a glass of bourbon in his hand, was Gabriel.
"You can't do this, Gabriel!" Damon screamed, pointing a shaking finger at his half-brother. "You've been in Europe for ten years! You don't own this family! Father was senile when he signed that trust addendum!"
"Father was entirely coherent," Gabriel said smoothly, taking a slow sip of his drink. "He knew you were weak, Damon. He knew that the moment he was incapacitated, you would sell off our logistics routes to the Valenti crime family in Chicago just to cover your gambling debts."
Damon’s face turned white. "That’s a lie!"
"I have the wire transfers, brother," Gabriel said, his hazel eyes flashing with lethal satisfaction. "You traded family intelligence for five million dollars. And when Cora Walsh stumbled upon your modified inventory logs in the kennel office, you tried to destroy her to cover your tracks."
At that moment, Cora stepped into the parlor. Nero walked beside her, his claws clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor.
Damon turned, his eyes locking onto Cora, his hatred boiling over. "You!" he snarled, taking a furious step toward her. "You little gutter rat! You think because you sleep in the staff quarters you're untouchable?!"
Before Damon could take another step, Nero let out a blood-curdling roar that shook the crystal chandeliers overhead. The massive mastiff lunged forward, stopping precisely six inches from Damon’s knees, his massive jaws exposed, his dark eyes locked onto Damon’s throat with lethal intent.
Damon gasped, stumbling backward, tripping over an ottoman and falling hard onto his back. He scrambled frantically toward the fireplace, terrified out of his mind.
"Get him away from me!" Damon shrieked. "He's crazy! Shoot him!"
Cora didn't flinch. She placed a calm, gentle hand on the back of Nero’s neck. "Nero, heel."
The massive beast instantly ceased his growling, stepping back to stand precisely at Cora’s left hip, his heavy head held high, his eyes never leaving the trembling man on the floor.
Gabriel smiled slowly, a look of profound admiration passing over his face as he looked at Cora. "Impressive control, Miss Walsh."
Gabriel walked over to Damon, looking down at his brother with absolute contempt. "You have until midnight to pack one suitcase, Damon. A car will take you to a private property in rural Montana. You will remain there under guard until the federal investigation into your wire fraud is complete."

"You're exiling me?!" Damon wept.
"I'm saving your life from the Valentis," Gabriel replied coldly. "Be grateful I still carry our father's last name."
