Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and the Truth

By morning, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, clear autumn day.

Federal agents and Gabriel’s private legal team swept the estate, quietly removing the bodies and taking Marco Valenti into federal custody under heavy guard. The Valenti syndicate's influence in Tennessee was permanently dismantled; Marco’s confession under federal interrogation implicated the entire Chicago operation in state-border trafficking and extortion.

In the grand parlor of the Thorne mansion, sunshine poured through the clean glass windows.

Old Julian Thorne, resting in an advanced motorized wheelchair, was brought into the room by his private nurse. Though his stroke had stolen his speech, his dark hazel eyes—so like Gabriel’s—were clear, sharp, and full of emotion.

Cora stood near the fireplace, wearing a soft cream sweater, holding a cup of tea. Nero sat comfortably beside Julian’s wheelchair, resting his chin on the old man's knee. Julian’s hand, frail and trembling, rested gently on the mastiff's head, stroking his fur.

Gabriel walked into the room, holding a set of legal documents. He walked past his father, nodding respectfully, and stopped directly in front of Cora.

"The federal investigation is closed," Gabriel announced softly. "Damon has agreed to a full plea bargain—he will serve fifteen years in a federal facility in Montana. The Valenti family is facing RICO indictments across three states."

Cora took a deep breath, feeling an incredible weight lifting from her shoulders. "It's finally over."

"Not quite," Gabriel said. He handed her one of the documents. "This is the final restructuring agreement for the Thorne estate trust."

Cora looked down at the paper. Her eyes widened as she read her name near the top: Cora Walsh — Co-Trustee and Executive Partner, Thorne Wildlife and Security Conservation.

"Gabriel..." Cora gasped, looking up at him. "This... this gives me fifty percent voting authority over the entire estate grounds!"

"You saved Nero," Gabriel said, stepping closer to her, his gaze locked onto hers with absolute, unwavering devotion. "You saved this family from destroying itself. And last night... you proved that you belong here more than anyone who carries the Thorne name by blood."

Old Julian let out a soft, approving sound from his wheelchair, his wrinkled hand giving Nero’s ear a gentle squeeze. Nero thumped his heavy tail against the floor in agreement.

"I don't care about the money, Gabriel," Cora whispered, her eyes shining with tears. "I just wanted a place where I belonged. A place where I wasn't just the girl with holes in her shoes."

Gabriel reached out, taking her hand in his, bringing her palm up to his lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her skin.

"You were never just a girl with holes in her shoes, Cora," Gabriel murmured softly. "You were the heart this house was waiting for."
