Chapter 3 - The Reunion at the Gates

When Cora walked out of the county jail’s side exit, the cold autumn wind hit her face like a slap, but she barely noticed. Parked along the curb was a fleet of three black reinforced SUVs, engines idling softly.

The rear door of the middle SUV was wide open.

Sitting on the leather seat, held back by a thick nylon harness, was Nero. The moment his dark, bloodshot eyes caught Cora’s small figure emerging from the building, the massive dog let out a sound that was half-whine, half-roar. He lunged forward, nearly pulling the two six-foot security guards holding his leash off their feet.

"Nero!" Cora cried out, running across the asphalt.

She dropped to her knees right on the cold pavement, throwing her arms around the mastiff's massive neck. Nero buried his broad, wrinkled snout straight into her collarbone, whining frantically, his huge tail thumping against the SUV’s leather interior like a hammer. He licked her face, her hair, her hands, checking every inch of her as if confirming she was whole.

"I'm here, sweet boy," Cora sobbed, holding his massive head between her small hands. "I'm here. Nobody's going to hurt you."

Gabriel stood a few feet away, his hands tucked inside his coat pockets, watching the reunion with an unreadable expression. The guards around him looked astonished; they had seen Nero tear through thick leather training sleeves and break heavy wooden gates, yet here the beast was, trembling like a puppy, resting his massive jaw delicately on the girl's lap.

"He refused food for four days," Gabriel noted softly. "The county vet had to sedate him twice just to keep him from breaking the iron bars of his cage."

Cora looked up at Gabriel, her eyes red-rimmed but filled with fierce gratitude. "Thank you, Mr. Thorne. I... I don't know how I can ever repay you."

"You don't need to repay me, Miss Walsh," Gabriel said, offering her a pristine linen handkerchief. "You are coming back to the estate."

Cora hesitated, wiping her cheeks. "Back? But Damon—"

"Damon no longer controls the estate," Gabriel said, his voice dropping an octave into pure, dark obsidian. "My father’s will contained an emergency clause. In the event of gross mismanagement or criminal investigation involving family assets, executive control reverts entirely to me. Damon has been stripped of his signing authority. He is currently confined to the east wing under private security supervision."

Gabriel leaned down, holding out a hand to help Cora up from the pavement. "You are no longer a junior handler, Cora. As of today, you are the Director of Estate Security Operations. Your salary will be tripled, you will have full control over the kennels, and no one—not even my brother—will ever enter your division without your explicit permission."

Cora looked at Gabriel’s strong, outstretched hand. She felt the raw power radiating from him—a man who moved mountains with a single phone call, a man who commanded an empire built on shadows. Yet, he was offering her dignity, protection, and the one thing she cared about most in the world.

She placed her hand in his. "I accept, Mr. Thorne."
