Chapter 10 - The Safe Home

Six months later.

The summer sun was warm and bright over Lake Michigan, turning the deep blue water into a sheet of glittering diamonds.

At the private lakeside estate in Evanston, the wide green lawn was filled with the sound of laughter and music. Friends, foundation staff, and neighborhood children played tag across the grass, while the smell of a summer barbecue drifted through the warm air.

James stood on the wide wooden porch, holding a cold glass of lemonade, watching the scene before him.

He had resigned as active CEO of Carter Enterprises two months ago, stepping into the role of Chairman of the Board, turning over daily operations to a trusted team so he could focus entirely on managing the foundation alongside Sarah. For the first time in his life, he wasn't running away from the shadows of his past. He was building a future.

Sarah walked up the porch steps, wearing a light summer dress, her dark hair blowing gently in the breeze. She leaned against the railing beside him, resting her hand over his on the wooden post.

"You look remarkably content for a man who used to spend eighty hours a week reading balance sheets," Sarah teased softly, her eyes filled with affectionate warmth.

James looked down at her, smiling gently as he wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side. "Balance sheets never made me laugh like this," he confessed quietly.

Out on the lawn, Lucy came sprinting up the grass, holding a small wooden sailboat she and Chloe had built earlier that morning. Her pigtails bounced with every step, her cheeks flushed pink with joy and sunshine.

"James! Mommy! Look!" Lucy yelled, leaping up the porch steps two at a time. "It floats! We tested it in the pond and it didn't sink at all!"

James crouched down, taking the wooden boat in his hands and inspecting it with mock-serious corporate scrutiny. "Impressive engineering, Miss Morrison. I might have to hire you as Head of Marine Logistics."

Lucy giggled, throwing her small arms around James's neck, resting her head against his shoulder with complete, unwavering trust.

"I don't want to be Head of Logistics," Lucy whispered softly into his ear, her voice carrying the sweetness of a child who knew she was finally, completely safe. "I just want to stay home with you."

James closed his eyes, holding the little girl tight against his heart, looking up at Sarah, who was watching them both with tears of happiness in her eyes.

"You are home, Lucy," James whispered, his voice filled with quiet, unbroken strength. "You're always going to be home."
