Chapter 3 - The Ghost in ICU

The fourth-floor intensive care unit was sterile, quiet, and smelled faintly of antiseptic and ozone. James walked down the hallway holding Lucy’s small hand. The little girl clung to his fingers like a lifeline, her small boots squeaking against the polished linoleum.
At the end of the hall, guarded by two of Vance’s broad-shouldered security operatives, stood Chloe.
She was sixteen, tall and painfully thin, with the same startling blue eyes as her younger sister. Her hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail, and her oversized denim jacket was soaked with melted snow. When she saw Lucy, her pale face crumpled.
"Lucy!" Chloe cried out, dropping to her knees as her little sister raced into her arms. "Oh God, Lucy! Where did you go? I told you to stay near the doors!"
"I found him, Chloe!" Lucy chirped, pointing back at James with an innocent, glowing smile. "I found the safe man!"
Chloe looked up, her defensive guard instantly snapping back into place as she recognized James Carter. Every news outlet in the Midwest carried his face. He was the cold, untouchable titan of Chicago real estate—the man whose family had ruined hers.
"Get away from us," Chloe said, her voice shaking as she pulled Lucy behind her. "We don't want your money, Mr. Carter. And we don't want your help."
James stopped a few feet away, raising his hands in a calm, non-threatening gesture. "Chloe, I know who you are now. I know who your mother is."
"Then you know why we don't trust a single word that comes out of a Carter's mouth!" Chloe spat, her eyes flashing with tears of rage. "Your father stole everything from my grandfather! He ruined our name, forced my mother into poverty, and left us to starve! And now you're standing here in a three-thousand-dollar coat while my mother is dying behind that glass!"
James didn't flinch. He looked past Chloe toward the glass wall of ICU Room 412.
Lying in the high-tech bed, surrounded by heart monitors and IV drips, was a woman in her late thirties. Her face was gaunt, her skin dangerously pale, but even through the tubes and monitors, James recognized the sharp, elegant structure of the Sterling family line.
"My father was a complex man, Chloe," James said softly, his voice echoing in the quiet hallway. "And he did things I am still uncovering. But I swear on my life, I had no idea your mother was living in Chicago, let alone in this condition."
"It doesn't matter what you knew!" Chloe sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "She has a failing heart valve. The hospital won't move her to the transplant list without a two-hundred-thousand-dollar deposit because we don't have insurance! She has hours left, Mr. Carter! Hours!"
James turned to Vance, who was standing quietly nearby. "Call the Chief of Surgery. Tell him James Carter is personally guaranteeing all medical expenses for Sarah Morrison. Transfer one million dollars to the hospital board’s emergency account immediately, and fly in the best cardiothoracic surgeon in North America on my private jet."
Chloe gasped, her hands falling from her face as she stared at him in utter shock. "Why... why are you doing this?"

James looked down at Lucy, who was holding the purple crayon drawing against her chest, looking up at him with uncritical, absolute trust.
"Because fifteen years ago, I was too young to stop my father from making a terrible mistake," James said softly. "I'm not too young anymore."
