Chapter 8 - The Awakening

Three weeks later.
The spring sun was beginning to break through the winter clouds over Chicago, melting the last remnants of snow along the riverwalk.
Inside a sunlit, private recovery suite on the top floor of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Sarah Morrison sat in a comfortable armchair, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket. Her color had returned, her skin glowing with health, her eyes clear and bright as she watched her daughters.
Chloe sat at a desk in the corner, working on her laptop. With James's help, she had been accepted into a prestigious private college-preparatory academy in the city, her dream of studying medicine finally within reach.
Lucy was sitting on the floor, surrounded by a mountain of drawing pads, colored pencils, and toys, humming a happy tune to herself.
A gentle knock sounded at the door.
James Carter walked into the room, carrying a large bouquet of fresh yellow tulips and a bakery box filled with warm croissants. He wore a casual sweater and trousers, looking younger and far more relaxed than the cold corporate titan who had opened his car door three weeks ago.
"Good morning, Sarah," James smiled, setting the flowers on the table.
Sarah looked up, her expression filled with a deep, emotional warmth that words could barely express. "Good morning, James."
When Sarah had first awakened from her coma two weeks ago and learned the incredible truth—that her father had been cleared of all charges, that her family was now worth billions, and that the man who had saved her daughters was the son of her father's partner—she had wept for hours. But James had remained by her side, helping her navigate the legal restoration of her father's legacy with quiet, unwavering dedication.
"How are you feeling today?" James asked, taking a seat across from her.
"Dr. Chen says my heart is operating at ninety percent capacity," Sarah smiled, reaching out to take his hand. "He said I can go home next week."
"Home," James repeated softly, looking around the bright, peaceful room. "We've secured the penthouse on East Lake Shore Drive. It’s fully furnished, fully secured, and ready for you and the girls whenever you're ready."
May you like
Sarah squeezed his hand softly. "James... I don't know how I will ever repay you for what you've done. You gave my daughters their lives back. You gave me my father's honor back."
"You don't owe me anything, Sarah," James said firmly, his eyes sincere. "Your father was a good man who was wronged by my family. Fixing that wasn't a favor—it was my duty."
