Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Boardroom

The morning sun rose over Lake Michigan, casting a cold, pale light across the Chicago skyline.
Inside the surgical suite, Dr. Chen performed a flawless four-hour valve repair procedure. Sarah Morrison’s vitals had stabilized, and though she remained in a medically induced coma, the immediate threat to her life was over.
James stood outside the glass window of the recovery room, watching Lucy gently place her purple crayon drawing on her mother’s bedside table. Chloe sat in a chair beside her, her head resting on the mattress, finally sleeping peacefully for the first time in days.
"They're safe for now, boss," Marcus Vance said, stepping up beside James. "I've placed four armed guards outside the room. Nobody gets in without your personal authorization."
"What about my uncle Richard?" James asked, his voice dripping with ice.
"He just called an emergency board meeting for two o'clock this afternoon," Vance revealed, handing James a printed memo. "He claims you've misallocated corporate funds to private medical charities without board approval. He's trying to invoke the sanity clause in your executive contract to strip your voting power."
James let out a short, dark laugh. "He knows Sarah is alive. He knows I found her."
"If Richard realizes you hold the original Sterling trust documents, he’ll go to war," Vance warned. "He controls three major institutional investment firms on the board. He has the votes to suspend you as CEO if you can't present Sarah in person to claim her stock."
"Sarah is in a coma, Marcus. She can't attend a board meeting," James said, his jaw tightening.
"Then you lose the company, James," Vance said bluntly. "And the moment Richard takes back control of Carter Enterprises, he'll pull the funding for Sarah's medical care, cancel her security detail, and tie you up in court for years."
James looked through the glass at little Lucy. The little girl turned, saw him standing in the hallway, and gave him a bright, sweet wave, holding up her tiny hand in a victory sign.

A slow, dangerous smile spread across James Carter’s face.
"Richard wants a war?" James whispered. "Then let's give him one."
