Chapter 6 - The Tiger's Den

At 1:55 PM, the executive boardroom on the fifty-fourth floor of the Carter Tower was packed to capacity. Twelve board members in immaculate suits sat around a thirty-foot conference table made of polished Brazilian rosewood. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city of Chicago stretched out beneath a grey winter sky.

At the head of the table sat Richard Carter.

At sixty-two, Richard looked like an older version of James, but his eyes lacked his nephew's discipline, replaced by a restless, greedy ambition. He tapped his heavy gold pen against his notepad, looking around the room with supreme confidence.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming on such short notice," Richard began, his voice echoing authoritatively. "We are here today to address a severe breach of fiduciary duty by our Chief Executive Officer, my nephew, James Carter. Over the last twelve hours, James has authorized unauthorized wire transfers totaling millions of dollars to private, unverified accounts, using corporate security assets for personal errands."

He looked at the board members, leaning forward dramatically. "James is a brilliant man, but the pressure of running this empire has clearly compromised his judgment. I move for an immediate vote to temporarily suspend James Carter as CEO and appoint myself as interim chairman."

"I second the motion," said Harold Finch, a veteran board member who had been on Richard's payroll for a decade.

"Before you take that vote, Uncle Richard," a smooth, powerful voice boomed from the doorway. "Perhaps you'd like to explain to the board why those wire transfers were necessary."

The heavy oak doors swung open.

James Carter stepped into the room. He wore a crisp midnight-blue suit, his hair perfectly combed, exuding absolute, terrifying authority. But he wasn't alone.

Walking beside him, holding his hand with complete confidence, was seven-year-old Lucy Morrison. She was wearing a brand-new, warm yellow dress, her blonde hair neatly brushed into pigtails, holding her folded purple crayon drawing in her small hand.

Behind them stepped two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, along with James's lead legal counsel, Evelyn Reed.

The room fell into absolute, stunned silence.

Richard's face drained of all color, his gold pen slipping from his fingers and clattering against the rosewood table. "What... what is this circus, James? You bring a child to a board meeting?"

"This child," James said, his voice echoing like thunder across the room, "is Lucy Sterling Morrison. Granddaughter of Thomas Sterling, the co-founder of this very company."
