Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

While the children slept peacefully in the guest bedroom upstairs—wrapped in silk sheets under the watchful eye of Mrs. Gable—Wesley sat in his dimly lit glass office on the second floor of the penthouse.
Marcus stood across from his desk, setting down an encrypted laptop. The room was heavy with tension.
"We ran the digital trace on the traffic camera blackout near the docks," Marcus reported, his voice low and clinical. "It wasn't a street-level hacker, boss. The override code used to cut the camera feeds came from a private server domain registered under Vance Bio-Tech’s old patent liquidation trust."
Wesley’s eyes narrowed into sharp, lethal slits. "Who controls that trust now?"
"After Sarah’s father died six years ago," Marcus explained, tapping his tablet, "the remaining intellectual property assets were bought out during bankruptcy court by a venture capital firm called Apex Capital."
"Who owns Apex?"
Marcus hesitated, looking uncomfortably at his boss. "Evelyn Shaw holds a thirty percent silent equity stake in Apex. Her brother, Arthur Shaw, is the managing director."
Wesley sat back in his leather chair, a cold, ruthless smile touching his lips. It all made sense now.
Five years ago, Sarah Vance had been a rising star in chemical engineering, developing a revolutionary synthetic enzyme delivery platform—a technology that could alter targeted cancer treatments globally. When her father’s firm suddenly caught fire and plunged into bankruptcy, Sarah was framed for safety violations, her reputation destroyed, and her father’s patents sold for pennies on the dollar to Apex Capital.
Evelyn Shaw had brought those exact patents to Quantum Enterprises six months ago, claiming them as her own proprietary development, using them as the primary bargaining chip to secure the forty-million-dollar joint venture with the Singaporean investment group.
"Sarah Vance didn't just have a hit-and-run accident yesterday," Wesley said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "She discovered that Evelyn was selling her stolen life's work to Quantum. She came to the city to stop her."
"And Evelyn couldn't afford to let Sarah talk to you," Marcus added grimly. "If you found out Evelyn's core technology was stolen from a ruined scientist, the Singapore deal would collapse, Evelyn would face federal fraud charges, and Quantum's stock would tank fifty percent overnight."
"Evelyn didn't just steal her work," Wesley murmured, remembering the damp, freezing laundry room where two four-year-old girls had been left to starve. "She tried to murder a mother and leave her babies to die on the street."
Before Marcus could reply, Wesley’s private phone chimed. It was an encrypted line from Dr. Harrison at University Medical Center.
Wesley picked it up instantly. "Dr. Harrison?"
"Mr. Davis," the doctor’s grave voice came through the speaker. "You need to get down here immediately. Sarah Vance’s intracranial pressure just spiked dangerously. But that’s not what’s concerning me most."

"What is it?"
"We ran her blood panel upon transfer," Harrison said, lowering his voice. "We found traces of a heavy synthetic paralyzing agent in her system—a compound that doesn't belong in any medical treatment. Someone administered a lethal chemical agent to her IV line while she was at St. Jude's Hospital."
