Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

The night air outside the University Medical Center was crisp and freezing as Wesley’s Maybach arrived at the emergency bay entrance at 11:30 PM.
Wesley strode through the ICU doors like an unstoppable force of nature, his face carved from stone, Marcus and four armed security personnel following right behind him.
Inside Sarah’s private room, Dr. Harrison stood beside the bed, holding a clear glass vial containing a pale amber liquid.
"We caught it because of the high-resolution toxicological screens your team requested," Harrison explained, pointing to the IV line. "Whoever poisoned her at St. Jude's used a slow-release compound. It was designed to cause an apparent respiratory arrest six hours after administration, making it look like she simply succumbed to her brain trauma."
Wesley walked to the edge of the bed.
Sarah looked small, fragile, and utterly helpless amidst the complex array of tubes and glowing digital monitors. Her hand lay limply on the white sheet—the same hand her little daughter had held so desperately hours earlier.
"Is she going to survive?" Wesley asked, his tone devoid of all warmth.
"We administered the neutralizing agent in time," Harrison replied. "The brain pressure is stabilizing. If she makes it through the next twelve hours without another spike, she may regain consciousness by tomorrow afternoon."
Wesley turned to Marcus. "Who had access to her room at St. Jude’s before we transferred her?"
Marcus pulled up a security log on his phone. "St. Jude’s CCTV showed a male nurse entering her curtained bay at 2:15 PM, wearing a surgical mask and paper scrubs. He stayed inside for three minutes, then exited through the rear service stairwell. We matched his height and gait to a known asset employed by Arthur Shaw’s private security firm."
"Evelyn is desperate," Wesley said softly. "She knows Sarah is alive, and she knows I took the children. She realizes her entire world is about to implode."
"What are your orders, sir?" Marcus asked, his hand resting near his coat holster. "We can have Arthur Shaw and Evelyn picked up by our private security team tonight."
"No," Wesley said, staring out the window at the distant, glowing skyline of downtown Chicago, where the dark silhouette of the Quantum Enterprises tower stood tall against the night sky. "Evelyn wants a stage. She has spent her whole life treating people like props in her corporate theater."
Wesley turned back to look at Sarah’s quiet face.
"On Friday morning," Wesley declared, "we hold the rescheduled Forty-Million-Dollar Singapore Investor Conference in the grand boardroom. I want Evelyn to present her stolen technology. I want her to feel like she has won."
May you like
"And then?" Marcus asked, a dark spark of understanding lighting up his eyes.
"And then," Wesley said, "we pull down the curtain."
