Chapter 8 - The Stage is Set

Friday morning arrived with blinding, brilliant sunshine reflecting off the glass towers of downtown Chicago.

The forty-fifth floor of Quantum Enterprises was immaculate. Catering staff in black ties moved quietly through the executive lounge, serving fine champagne, espresso, and delicate pastries.

Inside the Grand Executive Boardroom, a massive mahogany table was surrounded by sixteen plush leather chairs. Sitting on one side were Mr. Tan and his four senior partners from the Singapore Investment Consortium, looking sharp, professional, and expectant.

Sitting at the center of the table was Evelyn Shaw, radiant in a tailored ivory suit, a victorious smile fixed on her face. Her brother, Arthur, sat two seats down, holding a thick leather folder containing the final forty-million-dollar joint venture contracts.

"Mr. Tan," Evelyn spoke softly, her voice brimming with polished corporate charm. "We are deeply honored by your patience regarding Tuesday's brief delay. I assure you, the proprietary synthetic enzyme platform you are about to acquire today will revolutionize global oncology markets."

Mr. Tan, a dignified man in his sixties with silver hair, smiled politely. "We are very excited, Ms. Shaw. Quantum’s reputation under Mr. Davis is stellar. However, where is Mr. Davis? Is he joining us for the signing?"

Evelyn’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "Mr. Davis is... handling some personal family matters today. He has granted me full executive proxy to execute these agreements on behalf of Quantum Enterprises."

She reached for the gold fountain pen sitting beside the leather portfolio. "Shall we proceed with the signatures?"

"Not just yet, Evelyn."

The deep, booming voice echoed through the boardroom’s high-fidelity audio speakers.

The heavy double mahogany doors at the back of the boardroom swung wide open.

Wesley Davis walked into the room.

He looked magnificent—wearing a three-piece charcoal suit, his broad shoulders squared, his presence completely dominating the space.

Behind him walked four uniformed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by two city homicide detectives.

And walking right beside Wesley, holding his hand with incredible grace and dignity, was Sarah Vance—wearing a sharp, elegant navy pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back, a faint white bandage near her hairline the only remaining marker of her ordeal.

Evelyn Shaw’s face drained of every ounce of color. The gold fountain pen slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the mahogany table.

Arthur Shaw gasped, taking an instinctual step back toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

"W-what is the meaning of this?!" Evelyn stammered, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the carpet. "Wesley! This is a private investor signing! Why are there police officers in my boardroom?!"

Wesley walked to the head of the table, placing his hands flat against the mahogany surface, looking down at Evelyn with absolute, terrifying contempt.

"This isn't your boardroom, Evelyn," Wesley said, his voice ringing with absolute clarity. "And those aren't just police officers. They are here to execute federal warrants for industrial espionage, grand larceny, corporate fraud, and attempted premeditated murder."
