Chapter 7 - The Sleeping Beauty Awakens

At 3:00 PM on Thursday, the rain over Chicago stopped, leaving the winter sky clear, cold, and pale blue.
Inside Room 1204 at University Medical Center, the heavy silence was broken by a soft, long-gasping breath.
Sarah Vance’s eyelids fluttered open.
Her vision was blurry, swimming with soft white light and the unfamiliar shape of a luxurious private hospital room. There were no grimy windows, no roaring traffic, no rusted metal bedframes.
She felt no crushing pain—only a deep, numb fatigue, and the steady, warm touch of a hand holding hers.
Sarah turned her head painfully against the pillow.
Sitting in a leather armchair beside her bed was a tall man in a dark, charcoal suit. His executive jacket was draped over the back of the chair, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair slightly disheveled. He was reading a file on an iPad, but the moment Sarah moved, his sharp blue eyes snapped to hers.
"Sarah?" Wesley said, his voice dropping into a gentle, soft tone.
Sarah’s throat was dry, her lips cracked. "Where... where am I?" she rasped, her voice barely a whisper. "Where... my girls... Mia... Maya..."
Panic suddenly seized her chest. Her heart monitor began to beep frantically. She tried to sit up, her hands clawing at the white sheets. "Where are my babies?! Who are you?!"
"Sarah, calm down! Look at me!" Wesley said firmly yet gently, taking both of her shaking hands in his, grounding her with his powerful presence. "Your daughters are safe. They are at my home right now. They are fed, they are clean, and they are completely safe."
Sarah stopped struggling, her wide, dark eyes searching his face with desperate, terrifying intensity. "Who... who are you?"
"My name is Wesley Davis," he told her softly. "I'm the CEO of Quantum Enterprises."
Sarah flinched, pulling her hands back as if burned. "Quantum? No... no! Please! Evelyn Shaw works there! She stole my father's work! She took everything from us! Please don't let her harm my children!"
"Evelyn Shaw will never hurt your children again, Sarah," Wesley said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable conviction. "Two days ago, your twin daughters walked into my corporate lobby holding hands. They asked me where they could buy a father to help pay for their mother's medicine."
Tears burst from Sarah’s eyes, spilling down her pale, bruised cheeks as she covered her face with her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. "My sweet girls... my brave little girls..."
Wesley sat beside her, letting her cry out the years of built-up terror, pain, and exhaustion.
When her sobs finally subsided into soft hitches, Wesley handed her a glass of fresh water with a straw. She drank greedily, her strength slowly returning.
"Tell me what happened five years ago, Sarah," Wesley asked quietly. "Tell me everything."
Sarah looked into Wesley's eyes, seeing not a cold corporate executive, but a man holding a shield over her family. And so, she spoke.
She told him about her father's brilliant work on targeted enzyme delivery systems. She told him how Evelyn Shaw, then a mid-level venture capital consultant, had befriended her father, gained access to their lab data, and orchestrated the warehouse fire that destroyed their business and drove her father to a fatal heart attack. She told him how Evelyn had used forged non-disclosure agreements to lock Sarah out of the scientific community, forcing her into deep poverty to survive.
"And three days ago," Sarah whispered, her knuckles white against the bedsheet, "I saw a financial news release announcing that Quantum Enterprises was launching the Shaw Enzyme Delivery Platform with Singapore investors. I knew I couldn't let her sell my father's legacy. I drove to the city to find a lawyer... but a black SUV rammed my car off the road near the docks."

Wesley stood up slowly. His eyes were cold, dark pools of absolute retribution.
"Sarah," Wesley said softly, reaching down to press a soft kiss against the back of her hand. "Rest now. Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock, you are going to watch your father's legacy returned to you."
