Chapter 4 - The Safehouse Sanctuary

Mateo drove them to a secluded, unregistered cabin in the pine forests of Desierto de los Leones.

By midnight, a trusted, private physician—Dr. Castillo, a doctor who owed his life and career to Alejandro—arrived with medical equipment, oxygen tanks, and specialized trauma treatments.

For four agonizing hours, Alejandro paced outside the small bedroom while Dr. Castillo treated Valeria's chemical burns and administered neutralizing agents for the neurological toxins in her bloodstream.

When Dr. Castillo finally stepped out, wiping sweat from his forehead, his face was grave.

"The toxins were heavy organophosphates, Alejandro," Dr. Castillo explained softly. "A few more days of exposure, and her nervous system would have collapsed completely. But she is remarkably resilient... and your baby's heartbeat is strong."

Alejandro let out a ragged sob, sinking into a chair, burying his face in his hands. The weight of his blind neglect hit him like an anvil. He had spent years pursuing contracts and validation from a mother who viewed his wife as disposable cattle.

He walked into the bedroom and sat beside Valeria’s bed. She was awake, hooked up to an IV drip, her face pale under the soft yellow light of the lamp.

Alejandro gently took her hand, tears streaming down his face, kissing her bruised knuckles.

"I’m so sorry, Valeria," he wept, his voice cracking. "I brought you into a den of wolves. I believed their lies. I doubted you... Can you ever forgive me?"

Valeria reached up with her other hand, gently tracing his jawline. "You pulled away the blanket, Alejandro. That was the moment you chose me over them. Now, we finish this together."
