Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Mansion

Before Gabriel could speak, the terrace doors opened, and Mr. Pierce stepped out, impeccably dressed in a black suit.
"Ah, Mr. Moretti," Pierce said smoothly, a professional smile on his face. "We did not expect you back so soon. Shall I have the kitchen staff prepare dinner? And should I escort Miss Brooks off the premises for her... unseemly conduct?"
Gabriel stood up slowly, slipping the silver tube and note deep into his inner coat pocket. His face returned to its impassive, unreadable mask.
"Miss Brooks was merely executing a specialized sensory exercise I requested for the boys," Gabriel said coldly, his voice devoid of emotion. "She remains."
Pierce’s eyes flickered with a brief flash of suspicion, glancing down at the cut rope on the grass. "I see. As you wish, sir."
"Have my study prepared," Gabriel ordered. "And Pierce... bring me the quarterly security logs for the estate's western perimeter."
"Right away, sir." Pierce bowed slightly and retreated back into the house.
Gabriel turned back to Emma. The rain was falling heavier now, catching in her dark lashes and soaking the shoulders of her cardigan.
"Take the boys inside," Gabriel commanded softly, his tone surprisingly gentle. "Dry them off, give them warm milk, and stay in the nursery until I call for you."

Emma looked at the intensity in his eyes, sensing that something far larger and darker than a broken house rule had just unfolded. "Is everything alright, Mr. Moretti?"
"No," Gabriel said quietly, looking up at the towering marble mansion that suddenly felt like a cage. "It hasn't been alright for a very long time. But it will be."
