Chapter 5 - The Snake's Move

By the next morning, the atmosphere inside the Moretti estate had turned icy cold.

Gabriel played his part impeccably, acting unaware of Pierce’s betrayal while secretly coordinating with his loyal security chief, Marco, to track Pierce’s encrypted phone calls.

They discovered that Pierce had panicked after seeing Gabriel return early. Believing Gabriel was closing in on his treason, Pierce had alerted Victor Vance, the head of the rival Vance syndicate.

"They're planning an attack tonight, Boss," Marco reported inside Gabriel’s private basement office. "Vance’s hit squad plans to breach the estate during the storm at midnight, clear out your security, and frame it as an internal house fire."

"And Pierce?" Gabriel asked, his voice deadlier than night.

"Pierce is set to disable the security cameras at eleven-thirty and open the side kitchen doors," Marco replied.

Gabriel leaned back in his chair, staring at a silver framed photo of his late wife, then at a small drawing Leo had made for Emma that morning.

"Let them enter," Gabriel ordered calmly. "Set the perimeter trap. But first... move Emma and the boys to the safe house under the estate garden."

"Boss," Marco hesitated, "Miss Brooks refuses to go to the safe house without you."

Gabriel’s eyebrows rose. He stood up immediately and walked up to the nursery.

Inside, Emma was packing small bags with clothes, milk bottles, and the triplets' favorite stuffed toys. She turned when Gabriel entered, her expression resolute.

"I’m not hiding in a dark basement while you fight armed men alone, Gabriel," Emma declared, using his first name for the very first time.

Gabriel stopped, a rare, faint smile touching the corner of his lips. "You are a nanny, Emma. Not a mafia lieutenant."

"I am the woman taking care of your children," she countered, stepping up to him. "And whether you like it or not, I care about what happens to you."
