Chapter 10 - The House by the Sea

Two years later.

The sound of crashing waves provided a soothing background melody to a warm, golden Florida evening.

Sitting on a wooden bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean was a beautiful, two-story white house with blue shutters. A porch swing swayed gently in the sea breeze, and a small wooden sailboat sat on the grass near a neatly trimmed garden.

Sarah sat on the porch steps, sipping a cup of tea, watching the horizon where the ocean met the setting sun. She looked peaceful, happy, and completely at home.

The front door opened, and Daniel stepped out onto the porch, wearing a casual linen shirt and jeans. He walked over, wrapping his arms around Sarah’s shoulders from behind, leaning down to kiss her cheek.

"How’s the new book coming?" Daniel asked softly.

"It’s finished," Sarah smiled, leaning her head back against his chest. "The publisher called today. They're dedicating the first edition to the Florida State Police First Responders."

From down on the beach below, the sound of happy laughter drifted up on the ocean breeze.

Eli, now five years old, was running through the shallow surf, wearing swim trunks and a wide-brimmed sun hat. Beside him, trotting along the wet sand, was a golden retriever puppy named "Hero."

And walking right behind them, holding a small bucket of seashells, was Nurse Claire Morgan—who had become a close family friend and Eli’s godmother.

"Look, Dad!" Eli shouted, waving his arm wildly as he pointed down at the sand. "I found a giant shell!"

Daniel smiled, his heart filled with a warmth he had never known before that rainy night on the highway.

He took Sarah’s hand, helping her up from the steps, and together they walked down the wooden staircase leading to the sand.

Eli ran up to them, holding out a large, perfectly formed conch shell, its smooth inner spiral gleaming pink and gold in the evening sun.

"Listen," Eli said, holding the shell up to Daniel’s ear. "You can hear the ocean!"

Daniel leaned down, pretending to listen intently. "You know what I hear, Eli?"

"What?" the boy asked, his eyes wide with wonder.

"I hear peace," Daniel said gently, pulling the boy into a warm, tight hug. "Just peace."

Sarah knelt down beside them, wrapping her arms around both of them as the gentle tide washed over their bare feet.
