Chapter 3 - The Hatch Beneath the Floor

Agent Vance signaled for the team to form a perimeter around the cabin. Two officers slipped through the brush to cover the rear exit, while Daniel and three SWAT operators stacked up against the rotting front porch steps.
The air was heavy with tension. The only sound was the howling wind and the splash of rain hitting the tin roof.
Vance raised three fingers, counting down.
Three. Two. One.
The lead operator kicked the front door with explosive force. The deadbolt snapped, and the heavy oak door burst inward.
"POLICE! FEDERAL SEARCH WARRANT! DOWN ON THE GROUND!"
The operators swarmed into the cabin, weapon lights cutting through the thick dust and shadows.
"Clear left!" "Clear right!"
Daniel rushed in behind them, sweeping his flashlight across the interior. The cabin was a hoarder's nightmare. Stacks of rusted canned goods, yellowed newspapers, animal pelts, and car batteries lined the walls. A wood-burning stove sat cold in the center of the room.
"House is clear! No visual on the suspect!" an operator yelled.
"Check the floorboards," Daniel said, his heart pounding. "He’s got her underground."
Daniel dropped to his knees, shining his flashlight across the rough-hewn pine floorboards. Near the center of the room, beneath a filthy, stained rug, he noticed rectangular seams cut into the wood.
He yanked the rug back.
Reinforced steel plates had been bolted directly into the floor, securing a heavy, custom-built steel hatch. Securing the hatch was a massive, commercial-grade padlocked latch.
And sitting right beside the lock was an electronic timer wired to two sticks of industrial blasting cap explosives. The digital display was counting down.
04:59... 04:58... 04:57...
"BOMB! WE HAVE A SECONDARY DEVICE!" the lead operator shouted. "EVACUATE!"
"No!" Daniel yelled, pulling the heavy brass key out of his pocket. "She’s down there! There’s no time!"
"Reyes, that timer is running! It could be rigged to detonate if tampered with!" Vance barked, grabbing Daniel’s shoulder.
"Look at the wiring!" Daniel said, his voice deadly calm despite the sweat pouring down his face. "It’s a simple trip circuit. The timer is set to detonate the charge to seal the hatch forever. The key bypasses the mechanical lock!"
Daniel shoved his hand forward, sliding the heavy brass key into the padlock.
It fit.
With a heavy, metallic CLICK, the padlock released.
Daniel ripped the lock free, threw it aside, and grabbed the steel handle of the hatch. The metal was freezing cold. He pulled with all his strength, grunting as the heavy door groaned against its iron hinges.
The hatch swung open, revealing a dark, narrow ladder descending into a pitch-black concrete shaft.

From the depths below, a faint, terrified voice echoed up through the hole.
"Eli? Eli, is that you?"
