Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Web

The aftermath of the night at the hospital sent shockwaves through the federal law enforcement community.
With Viktor Vance in critical condition under twenty-four-hour armed guard at a secure military hospital, federal agents executed simultaneous raids across three states.
The digital key recovered from Eli’s shoe contained the complete, unencrypted research data for Dr. Sarah Bennett’s neurotoxin neutralization formula—along with a hidden file containing financial ledgers, email exchanges, and offshore bank account numbers belonging to the conspirators who had funded Viktor’s operation.
Within forty-eight hours, federal agents arrested a high-ranking official within the Defense Logistics Agency, along with three executives from a rogue defense contracting firm who had planned to weaponize Sarah’s research and sell it to foreign buyers.
The story dominated national news headlines.
“THE BOY WHO SAVED HIS MOTHER,” read the front page of the Miami Herald.
Inside a private, high-security recovery wing of the university medical center, three days after the raid, the heavy oak door swung open.
Dr. Sarah Bennett sat in a wheelchair, wearing clean clothing, her face color restored.
Beside her, holding her hand tightly, was Officer Daniel Reyes.
Standing at the window, drawing pictures with colorful crayons on a piece of white paper, was Eli.
When the boy heard the door open, he turned around.
Nurse Claire Morgan walked into the room, holding a tray with two fresh juice boxes and a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies.
"Look who’s awake," Claire smiled, setting the tray on the bedside table.
Eli dropped his crayon and ran across the room, wrapping his arms around his mother’s legs. Sarah reached down, pulling her son up into her lap, burying her face in his soft hair, weeping silent tears of pure gratitude.
"He never stopped fighting for you, Sarah," Daniel said softly, standing beside them. "Not for one second."
Sarah looked up at Daniel, her green eyes shining with emotion. "I don't know how to ever thank you, Daniel. You listened to him. Everyone else would have thought he was just a confused child."
"He was braver than any adult I’ve ever met," Daniel said, reaching out to gently tap Eli’s nose. "He’s a hero."
Eli looked up from his mother’s arms, holding up the drawing he had been working on.

It was a picture of a big blue police car, a little boy wearing a dinosaur T-shirt, and a woman holding a key—all under a bright yellow sun.
"That's us," Eli said proudly, pointing at the figures. "That's my family."
