Chapter 6 - The Siege on Floor Four

The sky over the city was a bruised purple as Daniel’s cruiser tore through the streets, siren blaring, tires screaming around every corner.
Agent Vance was right behind him in a convoy of federal vehicles.
"State Police units are establishing a perimeter," Vance’s voice crackled through the radio speaker. "But the hospital's smart-grid infrastructure has been compromised by a sophisticated cyber-attack. The building is in total lockdown. No elevators, no automatic doors, no communications inside."
Daniel slammed his vehicle into park at the emergency entrance.
The hospital was pitch-black. Emergency red strobe lights flashed silently against the dark glass windows. Terrified medical staff and patients were spilling out into the parking lot, pushed back by local patrol officers.
Daniel drew his sidearm, pulled his flashlight, and charged through the main glass doors.
"Reyes, wait for SWAT backup!" Vance shouted from behind.
"There’s no time!" Daniel yelled back over his shoulder, disappearing into the dark interior.
The air inside the hospital was eerie and silent, save for the rhythmic, mechanical blare of the fire alarm.
Daniel took the emergency stairwell three steps at a time, his boots echoing loudly in the narrow concrete shaft. He reached the fourth floor and threw his weight against the heavy steel fire door.
It was jammed from the inside with a heavy steel rebar pipe.
Daniel stepped back, aimed his sidearm at the heavy latch mechanism, and fired two rounds. Sparks flew into the dark. He kicked the door with all his strength.
The door burst open.
The hallway of the pediatric ward was illuminated only by the pulsing red emergency beacons. Medical charts were scattered across the floor.
At the far end of the corridor, standing outside Room 412, was a figure in a dark gray hoodie, holding a suppressed automatic pistol.
Viktor turned.
"Reyes," Viktor said, his voice quiet, amplified by the dead silence of the hall. "You’re persistent. I'll give you that."
"Drop the weapon, Viktor!" Daniel shouted, raising his gun, taking cover behind a nurses' station desk. "It’s over! The building is surrounded!"
"It’s never over," Viktor replied calmly. "The girl was brilliant. She nearly completed the synthesis matrix. But she left a missing variable in the code—a variable she encrypted and hid inside a physical key."
Viktor pulled out a second brass key from his pocket—identical to the one Eli had carried, but with a micro-USB storage chip embedded in the shaft.
"Her son was the carrier," Viktor continued. "She taped the paper to his chest, but she hid the digital key in his shoes. You missed it, Officer. You were too busy playing the hero."
Inside Room 412, a small voice cried out. "Officer Dan!"
It was Eli.
Viktor raised his weapon toward the wooden door of Room 412. "He knows too much about the facility locations. I can't leave loose ends."

"NO!" Daniel screamed.
Daniel lunged out from behind the desk, firing three shots in rapid succession.
