Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Architect

Two hours later, the storm had passed, leaving behind a cold, misty dawn.
A medical helicopter lifted off from a cleared clearing near the highway, carrying Dr. Sarah Bennett toward the regional trauma center where Eli was being guarded by armed state troopers.
Inside the command trailer, Agent Vance, Daniel, and a team of federal analysts were reviewing the documents recovered from the underground bunker.
"Dr. Sarah Bennett isn't just a mother," Vance said, slapping a thick dossier onto the table. "She’s a senior biochemical engineer for the Department of Defense. Six months ago, she vanished from her lab in Atlanta along with her three-year-old son."
"The media reported it as a domestic abduction," Daniel noted, leaning over the table.
"That was the cover story to prevent public panic," Vance replied grimly. "Sarah was working on a targeted neurotoxin neutralization agent—a chemical compound capable of rendering aerosolized nerve agents completely inert. Whoever took her didn't just want a hostage. They wanted her research."
"And Travis Cole?" Daniel asked.
"Travis Cole is an alias," Vance said, clicking a laptop keyboard. An image appeared on the screen: a mugshot of a man with cold, sunken eyes. "His real name is Viktor Vance—no relation—a former black-market arms contractor with ties to an international syndicate known as 'The Apex Group.' They specialize in industrial espionage and high-value political extortions."
Daniel remembered the look in Viktor's eyes at the hospital—the total lack of fear, the precise, military demeanor.
"He didn't leave that cabin because he was scared," Daniel realized, his blood running cold. "He left because he accomplished his objective. He knew we were closing in on the bunker."
"What do you mean?" Vance asked, turning to face him.
"The desk in the bunker," Daniel said. "The drives were missing. The main server rack had been wiped clean with a degaussing magnet. He let Eli escape to draw us out, trigger the countdown, and buy himself enough time to extract the final drive and disappear!"
Before Vance could respond, Daniel’s radio crackled to life.
"Command, this is Transport Alpha-One! We have a situation at the regional trauma center! We have a power outage across the entire North Wing! Backup generators are failing!"
Daniel grabbed his radio. "Alpha-One, this is Reyes! Where is the boy?"
"He's in Room 412 with Officer Miller! But the electronic door locks just engaged automatically! We're locked out!"
The line cut to static.

Viktor wasn't running away from the city.
He was going back to the hospital to eliminate the only witness who could identify his handlers: three-year-old Eli.
