Chapter 3 - THE UNTOUCHABLE MAID

By 8:00 PM, the grand hall was clear.

Don Silvio and his entourage had been escorted to the guest wing under heavy armed guard, their political leverage completely derailed by the unraveling of their clumsy frame-up.

In the warmth of the private family kitchen—a massive, rustic room with copper pots hanging from exposed wooden beams—the air felt entirely different.

Clara sat at the heavy oak table, wrapped in a thick wool blanket that Lorenzo’s personal doctor had brought her. Mia was sitting on the edge of the table, happily munching on a warm pastry that the head chef had personally baked for her, while Pino lay stretched out across her feet like a black velvet rug.

Lorenzo sat across from them, his collar unbuttoned, his cuffs rolled back to reveal thick forearms scarred by years of territorial conflict.

A steaming cup of black coffee sat between his hands.

Clara stared down at her tea, her fingers nervously tracing the rim of the porcelain cup. She felt utterly surreal. For two years, she had lived in the shadows of this estate, keeping her head low, scrubbing floors, terrified that one wrong step would destroy the tiny life she was building for her daughter.

“Why did you help us, Don Lorenzo?” Clara asked softly, her voice carrying a fragile, hesitant warmth. “I am just a maid. You didn't have to ruin an alliance for us.”

Lorenzo looked up, his dark eyes meeting hers.

“Three years ago, my brother was betrayed by his own allies because he trusted titles over truth,” Lorenzo said, his tone quiet and stripped of pretense. “I built my reign on absolute control. But a man who allows a child to be terrorized under his own roof isn't a Don, Clara. He’s a coward.”

Mia wiped a bit of sugar from her cheek and looked up at Lorenzo. “You smell like coffee again.”

A faint, almost invisible smile touched the corner of Lorenzo’s stern mouth—a sight that would have shocked every lieutenant in the syndicate.

“And you smell like pastries, little rabbit,” Lorenzo replied gently.

Clara looked between Lorenzo and her daughter, a lump forming in her throat. For the first time since her husband had died in a freight accident two years prior, leaving her penniless and vulnerable, she felt a strange, terrifying sensation inside her chest.

Safety.

“Don Silvio will not let this go,” Clara whispered, her eyes filled with concern. “He is a powerful man. He wanted Bianca married to you so his family could control your shipping ports. If he knows you humiliated him for my sake...”

“Let him try,” Lorenzo said, setting his coffee cup down with a solid clack. “As of tonight, your duties as a housemaid are terminated.”

Clara’s heart dropped into her stomach. “Don Lorenzo... please, I need the job! I have nowhere else to go—"

“You didn't let me finish,” Lorenzo interrupted smoothly. “You are no longer a maid. You and Mia will move into the primary family suites on the third floor. You will have a private tutor for Mia, a personal security detail, and a seat at my table.”

May you like

Clara gasped, her hand flying to her chest. “I... I can’t accept that! The other families... your men... they will talk! They’ll say—"

“They will say that Clara and Mia are under the absolute protection of Lorenzo Duca,” Lorenzo said, standing up from the table, his tall frame blocking out the kitchen light. “And anyone who has a problem with that can bring it to me directly.”
