Chapter 5 - THE STORM GATHERS

By nightfall, the Moretti family had evacuated the estate under the watchful eyes of Lorenzo’s armed guards.

The rejection of the alliance sent shockwaves through the regional underground network. Don Silvio Moretti was a vengeful, dangerous man who controlled the mercenary syndicates along the southern border. Being publicly humiliated by Lorenzo Duca meant Silvio would either have to bow down or launch an all-out war to save his reputation.

Inside Lorenzo’s private war room, six senior lieutenants stood around a large oak table covered in maps and electronic surveillance monitors.

Marco, Lorenzo’s chief lieutenant, slammed a dossier onto the table. “Silvio has already contacted the southern mercenary syndicates, Boss. He’s hired forty high-grade operatives from across the border. They’re assembling at his villa in Verona. He intends to strike our supply convoys by Friday.”

The lieutenants looked at each other nervously.

“Was it wise, Don Lorenzo?” one elderly lieutenant named Vittorio asked hesitantly. “To break a ten-year peace agreement over a maid’s dispute? Our margins along the southern trade routes will drop forty percent if war breaks out.”

Lorenzo sat at the head of the table, a crystal glass of scotch resting in his hand. He didn't look angry. He looked entirely focused.

“Silvio didn't want an alliance, Vittorio,” Lorenzo explained coldly. “He wanted an infiltration. He paid my housekeeper to frame Clara to prove he could control the internal staff of this house. If I had signed that marriage contract with Bianca, Silvio would have poisoned my wine within six months and taken the northern shipping ports for himself.”

The lieutenants went quiet. They knew Lorenzo’s strategic mind was never wrong.

“What about the girl and the child, Boss?” Marco asked softly. “They are a liability as long as Silvio is active. Should we move them to the safehouse in Switzerland?”

Before Lorenzo could answer, the heavy door of the war room clicked open.

Clara stood in the doorway, carrying a tray with fresh espresso and hot water. She wore a simple, elegant navy dress that Lorenzo had bought for her, her dark hair falling softly over her shoulders.

The lieutenants immediately straightened up, bowing their heads respectfully. The rumors had already spread through the estate—Clara was no longer a servant. She was under the Don’s personal protection.

“I brought coffee,” Clara said quietly, setting the tray on a side table.

Lorenzo stood up from his leather chair, walking over to her. “You shouldn't be wandering the halls at night, Clara. My men are on high alert.”

Clara looked up into his dark eyes, her expression soft yet filled with an unshakeable strength. “I heard Marco speaking about the safehouse. If you want us to go to Switzerland for your safety, I will take Mia and leave. I don't want to be the reason your men are put in danger.”

Lorenzo stared down at her. He reached out, his thick thumb gently brushing against her cheek, a gesture so tender it made the hardened lieutenants in the room look away in respect.

“You are not going to Switzerland, Clara,” Lorenzo said softly. “You and Mia are staying right here. This house has been cold and dead for thirteen years. You brought life back into these halls, and I will tear down every family in the south before I let anyone take that away from us.”

Clara’s heart fluttered wildly in her chest. She leaned her cheek slightly into his hand, her breath catching in her throat as she looked into the eyes of the man who held her entire world in his hands.
