Chapter 8 - THE RETURN OF THE DON

By 9:00 AM, the morning sun broke through the storm clouds over Lorenzo’s estate, painting the stone walls and autumn gardens in ribbons of brilliant gold and amber.

Inside the estate, clean-up crews had already restored order to the east wing.

The reinforced door of the third-floor panic room clicked open.

Clara stepped out cautiously, holding Mia’s small hand.

The bedroom was quiet and warm. Sitting in the armchair near the balcony window was Lorenzo.

He had showered and changed into a clean, dark blue sweater and dark trousers. His hands held a warm cup of coffee, and his hair was still slightly damp. Pino lay stretched out at his feet.

The moment Mia saw him, she broke free from Clara’s hand and ran across the floor as fast as her small legs could carry her.

“Coffee man!” Mia cheered, throwing her arms around Lorenzo’s knees.

Lorenzo set his coffee cup down on the side table, effortlessly lifting Mia up into his lap. He gently adjusted her soft brown hair, looking into her bright, innocent eyes that held zero knowledge of the war that had been fought for her safety that night.

“Did you sleep well, little rabbit?” Lorenzo asked softly.

“I slept good,” Mia giggled, patting his cheek with her small hand. “Pino barked at the wall once, but I told him to be quiet.”

Lorenzo let out a soft, genuine chuckle—a sound that made Clara’s heart swell with an overwhelming, breathless warmth.

Clara walked over, stopping beside his chair. She looked down at him, her eyes searching his face for any sign of injury.

“Is it over?” Clara asked in a quiet whisper.

Lorenzo looked up, his dark eyes meeting hers with an intensity that made the rest of the world fade away.

“It’s over, Clara,” Lorenzo said gently. “The Moretti family is gone. The southern border is secure. Nobody will ever threaten you or Mia again.”

Clara felt tears of profound relief spring to her eyes. She dropped to her knees beside his chair, resting her hands over his on the armrest.

“I don't know how to thank you, Lorenzo...” Clara wept softly. “You risked everything for us...”

Lorenzo leaned down, his large, scarred hand gently lifting her chin so she had no choice but to look into his eyes.

“You don't need to thank me, Clara,” Lorenzo murmured, his voice filled with a deep, unshakeable truth. “Thirteen years ago, I thought my life was meant for nothing more than blood and contracts. But when I heard Mia crying behind those trash cans... when I saw you standing in that hall protecting her... I realized I had finally found something worth living for.”

Clara stared at him, her heart beating furiously against her ribs. Slowly, deliberately, she leaned up and pressed her lips against his in a soft, tender kiss that sealed their futures together forever.

Mia clapped her small hands delightedly from his lap. “Mommy kissed the coffee man!”

Lorenzo smiled against Clara’s lips, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close against his chest.
