Chapter 4 - Walking Among Wolves

Stepping into Julian’s world wasn't easy. High society viewed Abby as an interloper—a hired help who had somehow bewitched one of the city's most eligible and ruthless bachelors. At a high-profile charity gala hosted at the museum downtown, the daggers came out wrapped in silk and pearls.
Victoria Vance, a socialite whose family had tried to merge business assets with the Cross Corporation for years, cornered Abby near the champagne fountain.
“I don't know what kind of game you’re playing with Julian, cleaning girl,” Victoria sneered, swirling her drink. “Men like him don't marry women who scrub floors. They use them, and then they throw them away when the novelty wears off.”
Abby didn't flinch. Working double shifts in hostile environments had taught her how to handle toxic personalities long before she met high-society snobs.

“If Julian wanted someone who cared about gossip and hollow status, Victoria, he wouldn't have hired me,” Abby replied with a cool, disarming smile. “He prefers people with actual substance.”
Before Victoria could retort, Julian appeared behind Abby, his hand resting securely and possessively on the small of her back. The chill in Julian’s eyes as he looked at Victoria made the socialite pale and step back into the crowd.
