Chapter 1 - THE NAME ON THE SCREEN

The screen of Julian Calloway’s phone flickered in the dim light of the kitchenette, casting a pale blue glow over the formica countertop.
The name illuminating the screen wasn't just a string of digits. It was a ghost that had haunted Nora’s nightmares for eight months.
DEVIN VANCE.
Nora’s breath seized in her throat. Her grip on Lily’s bottle tightened so violently that the plastic squeaked under her fingers. Lily blinked up at her, mid-swallow, her little eyes heavy with sleep, oblivious to the earthquake currently shattering the small room.
On the counter, the phone vibrated again. Bzzzz. Bzzzz.
Julian didn't answer it immediately. His sharp gray eyes darted from the screen to Nora’s face. He saw the sudden, terrifying drain of color from her cheeks, the way her chest stopped moving, the sheer, unadulterated horror reflecting in her eyes.
"Nora?" Julian’s voice dropped, quiet and measured. "What's wrong?"
"Don't..." Nora choked out, her voice barely a thread. "Don't answer that."
Julian reached out, his long fingers hovering over the phone. "It's my Chief Financial Officer. He’s been trying to reach me about an emergency audit—"
"Devin Vance is your CFO?" Nora whispered. The room seemed to tilt beneath her feet. The radiator gave a loud, metallic clunk, like a cell door slamming shut. "The man who runs Calloway Industries' finances... is Devin?"
Julian paused, his brow furrowing as he studied her. The air between them grew heavy, charged with a sudden, suffocating static.
"Yes," Julian said slowly, turning the phone face down to silence the buzzing. "Devin Vance has been with Calloway for three years. How do you know him, Nora?"
A bitter, hollow laugh escaped Nora’s lips, though no smile touched her face. She looked down at the tiny baby resting in the crook of her arm—the baby who shared Devin’s high cheekbones, the baby who had spent six weeks in the NICU fighting for her life while Devin was out buying sports cars and attending charity galas on Julian Calloway’s payroll.
"He's the reason my checking account has three dollars and eighteen cents," Nora said, her voice trembling with a decade's worth of suppressed rage and heartbreak. "He's the reason I spent six weeks sleeping in a hospital chair. And he’s the reason..." She paused, looking down at Lily's dark curls. "...he's the reason Lily doesn't have a father."
Julian’s posture shifted instantly. The easy, quiet benevolence he had displayed while unpacking groceries vanished, replaced by the razor-sharp stillness of a man who spent his life evaluating threats in boardrooms.
"Explain," Julian commanded softly.
"Eight months ago, I was working as a nursing assistant," Nora said, the words spilling out in a jagged rush. "Devin and I had been dating for a year. He told me he loved me. He told me we were going to buy a home together. Then I found out I was pregnant. I showed him the test on a Tuesday night. By Wednesday morning, he had wiped our joint savings account, changed his phone number, and broken his lease on his apartment."
She looked up at Julian, her brown eyes burning through tears.
"When Lily was born ten weeks early, I tried to reach him at Calloway Industries. I submitted my résumé to your administrative department twice—not just because I needed a job, but because I was desperate to get a message through to your legal department for child support. Both times, my application was rejected within an hour. Automatic system rejections."
Julian’s face hardened, his jaw setting so tight a muscle ticked near his ear.
"An hour?" Julian repeated quietly. "Human Resources takes at least three days to filter applications. Unless..."
"Unless someone flagged my name," Nora finished for him. "Devin blocked me from your company. He made sure I couldn't get a job, he made sure I couldn't reach him, and he left his premature daughter to freeze in this apartment."
Julian stared at her for a long, silent moment. Slowly, he picked up his phone. He didn't answer Devin's call. Instead, he opened a private secure messaging application, his thumb moving across the glass with swift, lethal precision.
"What are you doing?" Nora asked, suddenly terrified that she had said too much, that this powerful stranger would side with his top executive.
Julian set the phone back down on the counter. His expression was as cold and unyielding as the winter ice outside her window.
"I just placed Devin Vance on administrative leave, pending an immediate forensic audit of his department," Julian said calmly. "And I summoned my head of Security and my Chief Legal Counsel to my office for 6:00 AM."

He looked down at Lily, who had finally fallen fast asleep, the empty bottle resting loosely against her cheek.
"I didn't reject your résumé, Nora," Julian said softly, his voice cutting through the quiet room like a blade. "Devin did. Because he knew if you stepped foot inside Calloway Industries, I would find out what kind of monster I was paying two million dollars a year."
