Chapter 5 - THE THREAT FROM THE SHADOWS

Three weeks passed, and life at Calloway Industries shifted into a new, fast-paced rhythm.
Nora was given a spacious corner office on the 48th floor, adjacent to Julian’s suite. Attached to her office was a fully equipped private nursery, staffed by a licensed, vetted pediatric nurse named Clara, allowing Nora to work while keeping Lily just a few feet away.
For the first time in her life, Nora wasn't just surviving; she was thriving. Her natural intelligence, honed by years of managing complex patient care in nursing homes, made her an exceptional Special Liaison. She restructured Calloway’s community outreach programs, establishing a ten-million-dollar fund specifically designed to assist single mothers facing medical bankruptcy.
Yet, despite her newfound security, a dark shadow still lingered on the horizon.
Devin Vance had not gone quietly into the night.
"He's filed a formal motion for joint custody," Sophia, Calloway Industries' lead family law attorney, said as she walked into Nora’s office on a rainy Thursday afternoon. She laid a stack of court papers on Nora’s desk.
Nora felt her stomach drop. "Custody? After everything he did? He abandoned her! He tried to starve her!"
"It's a tactical move, Nora," Sophia explained, taking a seat across from her. "Devin’s criminal defense team knows he's facing severe prison time for the wire fraud and embezzlement we uncovered during the audit. They're trying to use Lily as a bargaining chip. If he can prove he’s a 'reformed, loving father' seeking custody, he thinks the judge will grant him probation instead of federal prison."
"He doesn't care about Lily," Nora said, her voice shaking with rage. "He just wants to use her as a shield to save himself from prison!"
"We know," a deep voice spoke from the doorway.
Julian stepped into the office, carrying two cups of fresh coffee. He handed one to Nora, his presence immediately radiating a calm, protective warmth that eased the panic in her chest.
"I spoke with the District Attorney ten minutes ago," Julian said, leaning against the edge of her desk. "Devin’s trial is set for next month. But his legal team is playing dirty. They’ve hired a private investigator to dig into your past, Nora."
Nora frowned. "My past? I worked twelve hours a day and went to bed. I don't have anything to hide."
"They don't need real dirt," Julian warned, his gray eyes darkening. "They just need to create enough doubt about your stability to force a court-ordered custody evaluation. They’re going to claim you're unfit because of your past debt, your medical leave, and the fact that you're living in an apartment provided by Calloway Industries."
Nora gripped her coffee cup tightly. "What do we do?"

Julian looked at her, his expression unreadable, yet filled with a quiet, unwavering resolve.
"We stop playing defense," Julian said. "We hit them where they least expect it."
