Chapter 2 - THE MORNING OF RECKONING

By 5:30 AM, the sky over Indianapolis was the color of a bruised plum.
Nora hadn't slept a single minute. She sat on the worn edge of her sofa, wrapped in a faded fleece blanket, watching Lily sleep peacefully in the portable bassinet Julian had brought up from his SUV before he left at 2:00 AM.
Alongside the bassinet, Julian’s team had delivered a high-grade infant monitor, three cases of ready-to-feed formula, and a heavy white envelope that currently sat unopened on her coffee table.
On the outside of the envelope, written in crisp, authoritative penmanship, were four words: Read before 8:00 AM.
Nora picked up the envelope, her fingers trembling. Inside was a legal document and a handwritten note from Julian.
Nora,
The system failed you, but my company was used as the weapon. I do not tolerate corruption in my boardroom, nor do I tolerate cowardice in the men who represent my name.
Attached is a formal employment contract for the position of Special Liaison to the Executive Office at Calloway Industries. Your salary begins today at $85,000 annually, with full health benefits effective immediately—including retroactive coverage for Lily’s medical bills.
A car will arrive at your apartment at 7:30 AM to bring you and Lily to Calloway Tower. You do not have to fight this man alone anymore.
— J.C.
Tears welled in Nora’s eyes, dripping onto the crisp white paper. Eighty-five thousand dollars. It was more money than she had made in three years at the nursing home. It meant heat. It meant medicine. It meant Lily would never have to hear her mother cry over three dollars and eighteen cents again.
At precisely 7:30 AM, a sleek black town car pulled up to the curb outside her apartment building.
The driver, an older man named Marcus with a kind smile and a sharp suit, held an umbrella over Nora and Lily as he ushered them into the heated leather interior.
Thirty minutes later, the town car pulled into the underground executive garage of Calloway Tower—a glass-and-steel monolith rising fifty stories above the downtown skyline.
When the elevator doors opened on the top floor, Nora stepped out into a world of polished marble, floor-to-ceiling glass, and suffocating tension.
Two guards in dark suits stood outside the glass doors of the grand boardroom. Inside, sitting at the end of a thirty-foot mahogany conference table, was Julian Calloway. He was dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, a cup of black coffee in his hand, looking like a king presiding over a court of war.
And standing on the opposite side of the table, looking disheveled, furious, and pale, was Devin Vance.
"Julian, this is absurd!" Devin was shouting as Nora approached the glass doors. "You locked my keycard out at 5:00 AM! You had security search my private office! I am the CFO of this company! You can't treat me like a criminal based on some unverified accounting flag!"
"I'm not treating you like a criminal because of an accounting flag, Devin," Julian’s voice echoed calmly through the glass as the doors slid open. "I'm treating you like a criminal because of the woman standing behind you."
Devin turned around, his smug, arrogant smile vanishing instantly.

His eyes locked onto Nora. Then, they dropped to the car seat in her hand, where seven-month-old Lily was sleeping, wrapped in a plush pink blanket.
"Nora?" Devin gasped, his voice cracking. "What... what are you doing here?"
