Chapter 9 - THE PROMISE AT DAWN

Spring arrived early the following year, turning the estate's sprawling grounds into a tapestry of blooming white lilies and green ivy.

On a quiet Sunday morning, before the city woke up, Julian took Nora by the hand and led her out to the marble gazebo overlooking the private lake at the back of the property.

The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of rose, gold, and soft lavender.

Lily was sleeping peacefully inside under Clara’s care, leaving the world completely still around them.

"Nora," Julian said, turning her to face him as the morning light caught the dark highlights of her hair.

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

Nora’s heart gave a sudden, joyous leap in her chest.

Julian didn't drop to one knee with corporate theater or grand declarations. He simply held the open box between them, revealing a stunning ring featuring a rare, flawless emerald surrounded by a halo of brilliant white diamonds—green, the color of the dress she had worn the night they conquered the shadows together.

"Two years ago," Julian said, his voice deep and steady, "you asked me why you couldn't feed your own child. And I told you I never thought you were a bad mother."

He took her right hand, slipping his fingers through hers.

"Today, I want to tell you something else. You are the strongest, most remarkable woman I have ever known. You brought warmth into my cold life, and you gave me a daughter I love more than life itself."

He looked into her eyes, his gray gaze burning with pure, unreserved devotion.

"Nora Callahan, will you let me protect you, cherish you, and love you for the rest of our lives? Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness spilled down Nora’s cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes, Julian," Nora sobbed joyfully, throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him close. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"

Julian pulled her into his arms, lifting her off her feet as he kissed her under the golden dawn, sealing a promise that had begun with three dollars and eighteen cents in the dark of night.
