Chapter 10 - The Forever Ledger

One year after that fateful night at District Twelve.

The rain fell softly against the panoramic glass windows of Adrian’s private penthouse apartment overlooking Lake Michigan. But inside, the atmosphere was warm, cozy, and filled with light.

A fire crackled in the large stone fireplace, casting soft orange light across the plush leather furniture and polished hardwood floors.

Evelyn sat on the rug near the fire, wearing an oversized cashmere sweater, a thick leather bound sketchbook lying on her lap. She wasn't auditing financial ledgers tonight; she was sketching plans for their new home being built on the quiet shores of Lake Geneva.

Adrian stepped out from the kitchen carrying two mugs of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows. He walked over, setting the mugs down on the coffee table before sliding onto the floor beside her, wrapping his long arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back against his chest.

"How are the blueprints coming?" Adrian asked softly, resting his chin on her shoulder, looking at her drawings.

"I added a library on the second floor," Evelyn said, leaning back into his warmth. "With floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a fireplace, and a large desk overlooking the water."

"Perfect," Adrian murmured, kissing her cheek. "And my study?"

"Right next to mine," she smiled, turning her head to look at him. "So I can keep an eye on your operational expenses."

Adrian laughed softly, his hands sliding down to cover hers.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, placing it gently on top of her sketchbook.

Evelyn froze, her breath catching in her throat. She looked at the box, then up at Adrian’s gray eyes, which were filled with an intense, quiet devotion.

"Adrian..." she whispered.

"Three years ago," Adrian began softly, his voice rich with deep emotion, "you walked into my office as a quiet, invisible auditor. You saw the mess I was living in, the danger surrounding me, and the loneliness I carried. And instead of running away, you stayed. You fought for me when I didn't even know I needed saving."

He opened the velvet box, revealing a flawless, brilliant emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the flickering firelight in brilliant flashes of green and gold.

"You balanced my empire, Evelyn," Adrian said, his voice trembling slightly with raw vulnerability. "Now I want you to balance my life. Forever."

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness welled in Evelyn’s eyes. She turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking into the face of the man who had given her a purpose, a home, and an unconditional love.

"Yes," Evelyn whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks as she smiled brightly. "Yes, Adrian. A thousand times yes."

Adrian smiled, his hands trembling slightly as he slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly—a brilliant symbol of a partnership built on trust, courage, and an unbreakable bond forged in the darkest night.

He pulled her into a passionate, loving embrace, kissing her deeply as the fire crackled beside them and the rain washed over the city outside.

The books were finally closed on the past. The debts were paid in full.

And together, they were beginning a brand-new ledger—one written in love, peace, and a future that belonged to them alone.
