Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

An hour later, the torrential rain hit its peak as Adrian’s SUV pulled into an abandoned industrial shipyard on the banks of the Calumet River—the location of Northside Marine Logistics.
The charred remains of the warehouse stood black and twisted against the stormy night sky, smelling heavily of wet ash, burnt rubber, and chemical accelerants.
Adrian opened the SUV door and stepped out into the storm, holding a large black umbrella over Evelyn as she stepped down beside him.
Waiting in the center of the muddy yard, surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries, was the final architect of the conspiracy—Victor Moretti, the ruthless underboss of the New York crime syndicate who had tried to expand his empire into Chicago.
Dominic Vale stood beside Moretti, his hands bound with plastic zip-ties, his face bruised and swollen from interrogation.
"Adrian!" Dominic cried out through the rain. "Help me! He's going to kill me!"
Victor Moretti stepped forward, wearing a heavy leather coat, holding a silenced pistol casually at his side.
"You took your time, Vale," Moretti called out over the roar of the wind. "I hear Judge Vance just resigned. You're faster than I thought."
"It's over, Moretti," Adrian said calmly, walking forward with Evelyn by his side, his umbrella shielding her from the driving rain. "Your bank accounts in Switzerland have been frozen. Your federal allies are in handcuffs. And your logistics network in Chicago has been completely seized by my security teams."
Moretti laughed—a harsh, rasping sound. "You think I care about Chicago, Vale? I came here for one thing: to tear down your empire and take control of the Midwest shipping corridors. And even if my legal plan failed, I still have enough firepower right here to put a bullet through your head and bury you beneath this mud!"
Moretti raised his pistol, aiming it directly at Adrian’s chest.
"Wait!" Evelyn shouted, stepping out from under the umbrella, standing directly between Moretti's gun and Adrian.
Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. "Evelyn, get back!"
"No!" Evelyn yelled, staring fearlessly at Moretti through the pouring rain, her dark hair plastered against her face, her velvet gown soaked. "Moretti, look at your phone!"
Moretti frowned, his eyes flicking suspiciously toward her. "What?"
"Look at your secondary encrypted terminal!" Evelyn shouted over the wind. "Five minutes ago, I executed a automated cross-border asset sweep using the master clearance keys I retrieved from Judge Vance’s office! Every single dollar your syndicate held in offshore transit accounts has been redirected into a public escrow account managed by the Department of International Revenue!"
Moretti’s face contorted in disbelief. He reached into his coat with his free hand, pulled out a satellite terminal, and checked the screen.
Red error messages flashed across the digital display: ACCOUNT ZERO BALANCE / ASSETS SEIZED.
"You..." Moretti stammered, his eyes wide with absolute horror as he stared at the quiet auditor standing before him in the rain. "You wiped my family's entire liquidity..."
"I told you at the police station, Mr. Moretti," Evelyn called out, her voice ringing clear and steady above the storm. "Numbers don't care how powerful a man thinks he is."
Moretti roared in rage, lifting his gun to shoot Evelyn.
Before he could pull the trigger, Adrian moved with terrifying, lightning speed. He shoved Evelyn behind his body, drew his concealed sidearm, and fired three precise shots through the rain.
The bullets struck Moretti dead center in the chest.
The crime boss collapsed into the mud, his gun slipping from his fingers, his eyes staring blankly up at the stormy sky.
The remaining four mercenaries looked at Moretti's body, then at Adrian’s unyielding, lethal glare, then at the sound of dozens of tactical vehicles pulling into the yard with sirens blaring.
They dropped their weapons instantly, throwing their hands into the air.
Adrian turned around immediately, grabbing Evelyn by her arms, pulling her close against his chest, his eyes frantically scanning her body.
"Are you hit? Evelyn, talk to me!" Adrian shouted, his voice shaking with a terrifying emotion she had never heard from him before.
"I'm fine," she breathed, her hands clutching his wet suit lapels. "I'm fine, Adrian."
May you like
Hearing her call him Adrian instead of Mr. Vale made him freeze. He looked down into her eyes—shining with rain, intelligence, and an undeniable passion that mirrored his own.
Without saying another word, Adrian pulled her face up to his and kissed her deeply, passionately, amidst the rain, the mud, and the flashing red lights of his approaching empire.
