Chapter 9 - A United Front

Six months later.
The grand ballroom of the Chicago Cultural Center was illuminated by crystal chandeliers, filled with hundreds of the city's most prominent business leaders, politicians, and community figures.
It was the annual Vale Meridian Charitable Gala, celebrating the launch of the Thomas Mercer Foundation—a hundred-million-dollar initiative fully funded by Vale Meridian to provide legal aid, educational scholarships, and financial assistance to working-class families across South Chicago.
Standing at the podium in a stunning emerald green silk gown was Evelyn Mercer.
Her hand had healed completely, leaving only a faint, elegant scar across her palm—a badge of honor she wore without shame.
"My father used to tell me that numbers never lie," Evelyn said into the microphone, her voice carrying clear and powerful across the silent hall. "He believed that if you look closely enough at the ledgers of a city, you can see its true heart. Tonight, we aren't just balancing books. We are balancing the scales of justice for families who have been invisible for far too long."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
Standing near the side of the stage, leaning casually against a marble pillar in his tailored tuxedo, was Adrian Vale. He watched her with an expression of pure, unadulterated adoration, clapping loudly alongside the mayor and federal prosecutor.
When Evelyn stepped down from the podium, Adrian met her at the stairs, offering his arm.
"That was an incredible speech, Vice President Mercer," Adrian murmured, smiling down at her as they walked toward the private terrace overlooking Millennium Park.
"Did I sound like an auditor?" she teased softly, leaning her head against his shoulder as they stepped out into the crisp spring night air.
"You sounded like the heart and soul of this city," Adrian replied earnestly. He pulled her gently into his arms, wrapping his suit jacket around her shoulders to shield her from the cool breeze.
Over the past six months, Vale Meridian had transformed completely. The illegitimate underworld operations had been systematically dismantled or converted into fully legal, highly profitable logistics ventures. The company was now recognized as one of the most ethical, transparent, and powerful corporations in the Midwest.
And at the center of that transformation was the quiet auditor who had refused to let the darkness win.
"I spoke with Marcus this morning," Adrian mentioned casually, holding her close. "He said the Gary docks expansion is three weeks ahead of schedule."
"I know," Evelyn smiled up at him. "I audited the progress report yesterday. You were over-budget on security measures."
Adrian laughed—a rich, genuine sound that echoed softly under the stars. "I will never skimp on security, Evelyn. Not when I have the most precious asset in the world to protect."
May you like
Evelyn reached up, her fingers tracing his jawline. "I can protect myself, Adrian. I think I proved that."
"I know you can, my love," Adrian whispered, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "But you'll never have to again."
