Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

For the next twelve hours, the eleventh floor of Vale Meridian Headquarters was transformed into a command bunker. Whiteboards covered the glass walls, filled with intricate flowcharts detailing financial networks, shell companies, shipping manifests, and criminal alliances.
Evelyn sat at a large glass desk in the center of the room, her Bandaged hand resting on a hot cup of tea while her left hand flew across a high-speed terminal keyboard.
Adrian stood behind her, one hand resting casually on the back of her leather chair, watching her work with an expression of intense admiration.
"Look at this," Evelyn said, pointing her index finger at a cluster of red nodes on the digital map. "The money stolen from Northside Marine didn't go to Detroit or New York. It was routed through a domestic clearing house in Springfield before being converted into physical bullion."
"Gold?" Adrian asked, frowning. "Physical gold is too heavy to move discreetly without custom transport."
"Unless you own a private armored transport firm," Evelyn said, her eyes flashing with intellectual excitement. She pulled up a subsidiary registry file. "Look at the ownership structure of Mid-State Vault Logistics. It was acquired two years ago by a holding company called Sentinel Management."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "Sentinel Management is chaired by Judge Arthur Vance."
Evelyn turned around in her chair to look up at him. "Julian Vance’s uncle. The senior federal circuit judge who presides over Chicago’s grand jury indictments."
The final piece of the puzzle clicked into place with terrifying clarity.
It wasn't just a corporate coup or a simple embezzlement scheme. It was a massive, highly sophisticated state-sanctioned trap designed to strip Adrian Vale of his entire empire using federal grand jury indictments, while Judge Vance and his co-conspirators seized his assets under federal asset-forfeiture laws.
"Judge Vance gives the federal prosecutors the sealed warrants," Evelyn explained rapidly, her voice rising with urgency. "Dominic creates the fake paper trail showing you're laundering bonds. Julian wipes the physical evidence in the fire. And when the federal marshals raid your offices tomorrow morning, Vance signs off on the immediate seizure of all your bank accounts, shipping docks, and real estate!"
"And who gets the seized assets?" Adrian asked, his voice dripping with venom.
"Mid-State Vault Logistics," Evelyn said softly. "They buy the seized assets at a federal bankruptcy auction for ten cents on the dollar."
Adrian let out a soft, dark laugh—a sound that sent shivers down Evelyn’s spine.
"Brilliant," Adrian murmured. "An absolute masterpiece of legal and financial robbery. They used my own corporate structure against me, hiding behind federal judges and legal loop-holes."
He looked down at Evelyn, his eyes burning with intense pride.
"Except they didn't count on one variable," Adrian said softly, reaching down to trace the contour of her cheek with his thumb. "They didn't count on my quiet auditor noticing a seven-figure discrepancy in an abandoned warehouse ledger."
Evelyn felt her face grow warm under his touch. "We have enough to expose them, Mr. Vale. If we submit these digital trails to the Department of Justice’s Internal Affairs division in Washington..."
"No," Adrian interrupted gently. "Internal Affairs takes months to execute an investigation. Judge Vance moves tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. If we play by their legal timeline, I'll be sitting in a federal solitary cell before Washington even opens the file."
"Then what do we do?" she asked, her heart beating fast.

Adrian smiled—a sharp, predator’s grin that transformed his entire face.
"We don't go to Washington, Evelyn," Adrian said softly. "We bring Washington to Chicago tonight. And we hit them so hard they won't even have time to burn their ledgers."
